Well my second thoughts have been banished. Wife and I were granted PM in Canada and were all set for the move, when my family ( Mom, Dad, Sister, Neice etc ) decided that they were moving to the UK from South Africa. As you can imagine, the Canada move was put on hold. However last night the wife gets home with our 6 month old son to discover that some scrotes had broken in and had some fun. Bye Bye laptop, Wii + a few other odds and ends, nothing major, however this is the second time in 6 months, first time around went the car ( rcovered undamaged thankfully ) and computers, golf clubs etc. Needless to say our bags are now packed, the house on the market ( rent or buy ) and on Monday we depart these shores for Canada. Whilst I am fully aware that there is crime in Canada, it has not effected me. When I add up 2 burglaries plus all the other bits in the UK at the moment.... role on Monday

I have lived in the UK for over 32 of my 39 years and have never been burgled. So, by your logic I will definitely be staying here! Hurrah, as I've just got the garden finished the way I like it. smile

You should go to Canada because you want to. Not because a couple of oxygen-wasting amoebas have driven you there.

I agree with the OP.

Sometimes you just get to a point where its the straw that breaks the camels back.

Good for you for following your dream. Having said that, how did you manage the whole visa side of things so quickly?

We're getting a lot of these "I'm leaving the country" posts at the moment. I hope it all goes well for you. I do find it sad that rather than making some positive statements about the new place, most originators of the threads post a load of negative things about here. Do they think no-one else has noticed that the UK has some problems?

Are you not excited about the new country, the new life?

big_rob_sydney - we started the process about 2 years ago as my wife fancied a change. The PM status was given last year, but with the family moving to the UK we decided to hang off the move so as to be with my family, after all I had not lived near them for over 12 years. This last straw when added to raising fuel costs, property market slow down, economy slow down, fall in IT contract rates etc etc, we decided the heck with it, after all my folks can fly to Toronto in under 7 hours and as they are on Brit passports can enjoy extended holidays, whilst we live in peace.

As said above, why do people get this, I mean I have NEVER been broken into, neither have my parents from the house I was born in. I have never had my car vandalised, never been abused by kids..

Just my luck some ass will break into our gaff and do away with everything now hehe

But seriously their are places in this country which are not only beautifull, but also dont suffer this crime you speak of.. and in my 5 moves I seem to have found one each time.. bar now as theres nothing beautifull about west london.

comparing the cost of housing over here, you can buy a place in Canada that requires would be burglars to have full hiking kit and supplies for the same price as a one bed flat around my way - so you can distance yourself from the scrotes very easily biggrin

Good luck to the OP, work colleague is looking to go that way shortly - whereabouts are you thinking of heading to? He keeps showing me 5 bed places on multi-hectare plots with lakefront footage for less than a decent merc costs!

Also what do you need to be able to move out there?

Not something I would want to do now, but it does interest me I want to see as much of this world while I can

ewenm - agree there are a lot of positives in Canada, for me the top ones are - I can see my tax $$ working in terms of education and services, to give an example, my wife's Uncle lives in Mississauga Toronto, he phoned to report a water leak at 07h00 on day whilst we were there, 30 minutes later not only was the repair crew there, the leak was sorted and before everyone jumps in here about similar service levels in the UK this has not been my experience. When students graduate from school, there is a requirement that forms part of their graduation that they have all participated in community activities which builds a sense of civic pride, the teenagers that I have had dealings with are by and large friendly and polite and do not hang around on street corners bored out of their minds as there are activities available to all, sport makes up a big part of everyones lives and the Canadians encourage people to be physically active. I could go on for ages here but lets leave it at that for now.

Witchfinder - again I know that there are burglars in Canada as there are in pretty much every country, however the BIG differance is that I ahve not been effected by them, nor has any of our friends and family, so from a purely personal view right now Canada is a better option for me.

Davi - we are heading to Toronto intially ( wife is a big city girl smile )also for the work that I do it makes sense as it seems to be the biggest market in terms of financial IT services. However my ideal would be a place out in the country with lots of space around me.

Yes and it's so isolated you can kiss goodbye to any form of social life.

There are positives and negatives to any location, which is why I always find these kind of threads a bit strange.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that things in the UK have deteriorated.

I'm just surprised that more people havent left already. How bad do things need to get before people really start to get the message? Your only real hope is to vote out the clowns responsible, and even then, you will still have massive government departments to be paid, hence massive tax to be collected. I suspect a new government wont have much chance to make much of a difference even with the best will in the world.

Get out while the going is good, I say.

Surely it's the exact reason that threads like this exist.

Yes everywhere has it's positives and negatives, it's just that for many, in much of the UK the negatives far far outweigh the positives.

That's probably because tax money doesn't fund water pipe repairs in the UK. Are the water companies in Canada all state-owned then, as that's the only way they could use tax $$ to fix your pipes?
