I finally discovered what was running across our roof today. It was a grey squirrel on his way to steal some eggs from a bird's nest. I filmed him doing it and was amazed to see him come down again with an egg that was a purple in colour - almost metallic purple.

Any idea what kind of UK bird lays purple eggs?

I would post a picture but the individual frames are incredibly blurred, partly due to the image stabilisation that appears to be about as effective as a chocolate teapot. I can't imagine what else it could be, other than a bird's egg...

I think both the Magpie and Starling lay blue/purple eggs. The Magpies egg has quite a sheen to it.

Would be rather apt if it was a Magpie's egg as they are notorious for stealing other birds eggs. Good on ya Squirrel.

If the nest is in your roof, then it's a Starling.

Hmm

Starling eggs are apparently turquoise - and we've found a few shells of that colour elsewhere the garden. But this egg was truly purple - not bluey or greeny purple but out and out purple. I tried to get a frame from the video but it's quite hard to make out in a single frame.
Definitely purple though.

Similar to the colour of the bottom centre square here:

I'll still go with Starling though. Eggs of most species can vary in colour.
