A few years back I embarked on an AAT course (think it was a Level 2 NVQ Accountancy)but didn't finish it due to various things.

Now the time has come for me to find a proper job and I've returned back to the idea of doing accountancy/book keeping.

I like the sound of book keeping and general adminy stuff but think I'd like to aim for full blown accountancy (it satisfies my OCD nature) but have no idea how to get in to it now. I've looked on the local college website but it doesn't seem to offer the course I was doing at a different college (to be fair, it was 5 years ago and 200 miles from here) and I don't really know if the courses they are offering are good bad or indifferent.

So how would those in the know suggest I get going with this? I am aiming to get a job of some description soon (very soon please..) and would like to do evening/weekend classes or self study if possible.

Would a firm take me on with little experience and then train me up as I go or would I need the piece of paper before hand?

Thank you people smile

you'll find that alot of Accountancy Firms will advertise for positions for Accounts Assistants etc either un-qualified or training towards a qualification. It would be a good route to go down as you will get the support and training whilst you study and if you're lucky a good firm may actually contribute towards your costs and encourage you to study further.

Large majority of firms seem to advertise their positions with recruitment agencies that specialise in Accounting. There are alot of these positions available at the moment in my neck of the woods.

Ahh I'll have a look there too.

Had a bit of a row with a recruitment agency as the chap I spoke to said I was a telling porkies as no such job was advertised and that I spoke bad English. Listen mate, at least I spoke English..Oh and I can use the internet too - unlike SOME PEOPLE. And breathe. furious

I do all my searching on-line with the agencies. Not sure if these guys cover your region but I would have thought they would but try - www.reed.co.uk. They have a division that specialise in accounts & accountancy and they also allow other agancies & firms to advertise their positions on their website, this giving you access to a wide range of jobs available.

What qualifications do you need to be a paralegal? I'd learn most things for £15 an hour

You might want to be careful saying that around these parts.

If you are a graduate the then one way to get into accountacy is a graduate training scheme. The big 4 firms take on lots of graduates. They then proceed to chew up and spit out a large portion of them. You usually need a 1st or 2.1 in a subject with lots of numeracy involved. The big 4 are:

PricewaterhouseCoopers
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu
Ernst & Young
KPMG

The 2nd tier firms also have training schemes. These include Mazars, Grant Thornton and BDO.
