Why do a lot of vegetarians eat fish?

As in the real world fish is an animal. SUrely they just don't eat land based animals then?

I also want to know why people you know or you are actually vegetarians?

Do people do it for health reasons? animal rights?

This is confusing for me, as I'm a country bumkin, so animals are what you eat.

I know a couple but it's on the basis that they dont like the taste rather than ethical concearns.

I have to admit I have considered it on the grounds that many of the animals we eat are not treated humanly. I have no problem with killing animals myself but it is my belief that it should be quick, stress free and relitivly painless for the animal, frankly many of the methods and systems used in the production of meat are barbaric. Does that nicely answer the question?

When I did eat meat (stopped when i was 8 or 9) I only ate steak or ox-tail stew, I used to suck the marrow out of the bone and then chew on the bone instead of sucking a dummy, never touched white meat or fish so it was no big deal.

Feel sick thinking about it now.

I do have some heebie geebies about the way some animals are treated - battery farming and such, when I lived with Roop it was organic all the way, made me feel a bit better, I have no problem with hunting either.

Just look up slaughter house pigs on youtube. One of the videos is seriously disturbing the way they kill pigs. I am not a vegetarian, and I love meat, but for the year 2008 it is seriosuly ridiculous the way pigs are killed.

An example shamelessly lifted from wiki:
"Laying hens are routinely debeaked to prevent fighting. Because beaks are sensitive, trimming them without anaesthesia is considered inhumane by some. It is also argued that the procedure causes life-long discomfort. Conditions in intensive chicken farms may be unsanitary, allowing the proliferation of diseases such as salmonella and E coli. Chickens may be raised in total darkness. Rough handling and crowded transport during various weather conditions and the failure of existing stunning systems to render the birds unconscious before slaughter have also been cited as welfare concerns.

Another animal welfare concern is the use of selective breeding to create heavy, large-breasted birds, which can lead to crippling leg disorders and heart failure for some of the birds. Concerns have been raised that companies growing single varieties of birds for eggs or meat are increasing their susceptibility to disease."

Plants have no central nervous system so are incapable of feeling pain.

What I find odd about veggies is that if they eat fish but don't eat meat due to cruelty, what of the fish who is left on a deck to suffocate? Or those gutted alive? Far worse than a cow despatched with a bolt IMHO.

Yup, poultry is the easy target. For some reason, people don't care about fish at all and care relatively little about birds. Yet the nice fluffy mammals generate more concern.

The alarming point is that farm economics mean you can rarely justify calling out the vet to deal with a sick animal.

We do a lot of research into farming methods to ensure the best possible health of stock with minimum intervention. As Grandad used to say, "If you look after your animals, they'll look after you."

As someone else said, "When the animals stop eating each other, I'll stop eating them".

One of the curiosities of modern life with the clinically similar plastic packaging of, say, pork chops and green beans, is that there follows a lack of "respect" for the dead animal. Few people recognise that when they leave uneaten meat they have contributed to the killing of animals simply to throw them away....

However this lack of central nervous system doesn't stop them reacting to other stimuli eg light, wind etc.

Link here showing aspirin blocks plants pain

Fair I suppose but we have to eat.

A plant can respond to cell damage etc. but lacks any method of cognative analysis. Similarly when you cut your finger your body responds physically but this is independant of the feeling of pain, you can cut yourself or damage cells without experiencing pain because your central nervous system has not been activated.

I lie a little for simplicity above. Plants sort of have a nervous system but it's designed to minumise damage so there is no reasoning centre, it is just a trigger to try and keep the plant alive. Also why would plants need to feel pain? It would serve no purpose and hence has not evolved.

I have drawn one conclusion about vegetarians. They are very selfish.

When folks have a "veggie" over, they make a massive effort to cook them a special meal to accomodate their preferences.

Why, when you go to a veggies house, do they never prepare a meat eater a nice steak to accomodat their preferences? Oh no, we have to eat like a rabbit.

You would get more credibilty in my house if you were prepared to show the same sort of effort/respect for my tastes.

A veggie that eats fish isn't a vegetarian, he/she is a pescetarian, but most restaurants seem to think it is veggie.

My BiL is a veggie, he just changed one time in the early 90s for "ethical" reasons. He eats fish.

That's a great reason to eat only ethically reared and killed meat, not become a vegetarian.

I dont eat meat or fish, dont feel I am missing out, and as someone who is interested in animal welfare its fits in with my ethics too. Not eating meat could make life difficult when eating out years ago, but no problem at all now. Vegetarianism is rapidly increasing in the UK.

If you eat fish then you're not a vegetarian, simple as that.
