8 years ago I saw a 'medals per head of population' table after the Olympics. Made quite interesting reading.

Just out of interest as things stand (as I type)

China: 1 medal for every 26.1 million people
USA: I medal for every 4.8 million people
GB: 1 medal for every 2.6 million people
Australia: 1 medal for every 740,000 people

ETA USA

Bit like Finland in World Motorsport Championships, with a population of just over 5 Million how many have we had: Hakkinen, Raikonnen, Makkinen, Rosberg, Solberg amonsgt many others.

Solberg's Norwegian but I take your point with Vatanen,Gronholm, Kankunen, Mikkola, Toivenen and others adding to the list. Like Australia, they punch well above their weight on the world sporting stage.

Republic of Ireland

20 medals
4,400,000 population

One medal for ever 220000 people

ETA: Sorry should have thought it through - thought it was total (ie all games) medal count versus population. Still waiting for our first this time around frown

They need to cater the events to our nations' strengths. Any event that involved binge drinking, TWOCing and petty crime, or moaning would be a nailed on gold. Get darts in there too. In fact all pub sports.

I think that it's admirable for a person made of bronze to win a medal at the Olympics.

Sir Jackie told "us" that "we"(Scotland) were the best country for motorsport championship winning talent in the World per head of population.

They aren't that brilliant at sport in general just very very good at a few select and visible sports. They aren't particularly good at athletics or football for example.

What they have done is concentrate on a bunch of sports they can win at, a number of which are difficult for none first world nations to compete in. For example they have more 50m pools per head of population than any other nation (it helps that most of them don't need a roof). In Cricket and Rugby have the advantage that they are essentially competing against the commonwealth.

They scout for talent in schools at a national level and then invest in elite athletes. The UK has only been doing this for the last ten years and you can see the result in cycling and rowing, we're beginning to do this in swimming too.

Didn't Eire win a gold one on the track and and have it taken back for doping?

Probably the brits, well behind the scenes anyway.

Hmmm, maybe! But it is the driver that gets the kudos.

Did you know Ross Brawn might be Scottish? I saw him in Edinburgh Airport just before hogmanay last year, was going to bother him but thought against it because he seemed to be with family.

I once saw my sister in Malaysia, I think she must be therefore Malaysian. smile

True they do get all the Kudos.
