Is there a rule which applies to boundaries? I always thought that as you look at your house,
the fence on the left is yours...??

It's usually on the deeds, I think.
Around here the motto is very much; "If you don't like the look of it, fix it yourself". Which is what I eneded up doing.

sometimes, as in our case, its a shared boundary so both are responsible for repairs

It can be any fence. If you have a conveyance plan of your land, the fence that has a "T" symbol on it on your side of the garden is your fence.

Thanks for the replies.

I think my neighbour is trying it on again.

The fence between us is manky. It was like that when we came to view the house before buying it. Matey nextdoor made a point about saying it was his fence. Fine, and we left it at that.

Over the 18months or so that we have been here, we've noted how tired the fence looks and seeing that he 'claims' the fence, he should therefore maintain/replace it.

Since he grassed us up about our decking, he hasn't been my most liked neighbour. I nipped out to grab a few bits from the DIY store and while I was out, he slipped a hand-written note through the door requesting me to fix a couple of fence panels which, he claims, have been damaged by me/my builders/gardeners etc. The panels in question happen to be the most rotten, beyond repair ones (they look like they were first put up when Thatcher moved into Downing St).

A quick glance at what he is now moaning at shows no damage, only years of decaying, degraded wood. But he's using this as an opportunity to blame it on the work we've had / still have going on.

Put a wire fence up. That'll piss him off.

Does it have proper posts? If so the person with the posts on their side are usually responsible.

It's the side where the fence posts are. My fence posts are all on my side - on all four boundaries... Expensive but you get to control what sort of fence you want and it all matches...

In this situation where your neighbour is taking the piss,I would put up a new taller fence on my side of the old one.
Theres no no law against having your own fence next to his.
Let the prick stare at his own manky fence.

Is he still trying to sell his house?

If he is, ignore him. Let any prospective buyers look at the manky fence. Might put them off if they see that they'll have to replace the fence if they buy.

If he wants to be childish, let him.

Drop a note through his door and kindly ask him to stop littering in your house with his stupid notes.

Oh and make sure your cat pisses on the letter first thumbup
