Hollywood Boulevard on a Friday night (well - actually early hours of Saturday morning) turns into one big drive by of pimped up cars with some exotica thrown in. Pretty good natured crowd when I was there.

Hhmmmm, perhaps 'drive by' not the best term to use when referring to LA......

I was sorely disappointed in L.A actually. I wasn't expecting miracles, but spent most of my time there being driven around in cabs thinking, "What a sthole".

Venice Beach and the Marina Del Rey aren't bad (not much to see in the latter, though), but that's about it.

The Queen Mary was very interesting, we stayed there for a two-day stop over. On the way back we stayed in the Hilton and wished we hadn't bothered. Not much else to commend LA that I remember.

ETA- One thing, now I'm remembering the trip, though not petrol related: http://www.getty.edu/visit/

There's so many better places to spend your time in California. I know my advice is a bit stark. But it is heartfelt.

Hi all,

USA forum is pretty quiet so I thought I would put this here. I am heading to central Los Angeles for the next month, anyone have any recommendations for must see/go things in the Los Angeles area? restaurants / bars / museums etc? I have a lonely planet guide to the area and have been trawling the internet but that can only tell me so much. Looking for some petrolheady suggestions!

Thanks

+1 it's a pretty grim place with little to recommend it.

I wouldn't want to stay in LA, not a nice place IMO. Go north (Santa Barbara is cool) or go east into the desert.

www.propstore.com

These guys have a London office which you can visit to check out all their movie props. I bought something from their American branch this month which is in LA - dont know whether the LA office also has a tour and stuff you can see if you visit like the London office, but if its your cup of tea might be worth checking out... especially if LA is as crap as others are suggesting.

The Griffith Observatory is worth a visit, I enjoyed the Planetarium and the view over LA and the Hollywood sign.

LA Farmers market was ok for some grub, usual shopping mall apart from that though.

Boyd Coddingtons Open House on the 2nd Saturday of the Month at La Habra, east of LA, well worth a visit.

The Farmers' market is worth a couple of hours.
"The Lobster" restaurant at the entrance to Santa Monica pier I found was very good, with good views, especially near sunset.

Don't bother with LA and head north along the coast to Santa Barbara or even up to Carmel.

+1 for the Getty Museum. Fantastic location and buildings, plus ridiculous amount of money to spend in order to keep their tax free status, so they can rent out artwork from collections elsewhere in the world.

LA is such a sprawling mess of a city it isn't really a tourist destination.

We enjoyed Universal Studios - but have to agree with the general sentiments from the thread.

As others have said, LA is such a sprawl of different areas it's impossible to describe it as one city.
But don't think there arn't places worth visiting there - there are plenty. I've stayed there for the last eight years as part of driving holidays and there's plenty to see.
My favourite areas are on the coast - Santa Monica is nice - check out Third Street Promenade and Ocean Boulevard; Venice is quirky with its front and canals. Beach communities are also very laid back - we stay in Hermosa Beach.
Definitely worth a drive are the Santa Monica mountains - you wouldn't know you are a few miles from LA - head up Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu, turn right at Malibu Canyon Road and right again at Piuma Road - takes you up into the mountains with great views back to the coast.
Getty Villa on Pacific Coast Highway, as as been mentioned, is well worth a visit - book in advance.
Great place for lunch is 208 Rodeo on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
Plenty more places I can recommend if you want...
