i'm guessing that this clown will get a slap on the wrist and have a week's giro witheld.

surely this should be treated as an attempt to bring an aircraft down, eg and act of terrorism if you like.

what goes though the mind of a cretin like this?

Would that be one of those presentation pointer things?

Never realised they were proper lasers.

I'm forced to wonder how 'blinded' anyone actually was by such a weak device. Most people will be thinking that the laser shone a dot into the pilot's eyes, I very much doubt the dot was any smaller than a bathtub.

They won't do perminent damage! GCSE/Standard Grade Physics, the pointer pens will cause eyes to go blurred for a while but never blind!

I know where they house one of the most powerful lasers in the world, its green!

O.K. that's great! The damage isn't permanent.

Try landing a plane full of people at 130 odd kts with people only temporarily blinding you.

In my opinion it doesnt matter if the pilot was really "blinded"

The scrote knew what he was doing and deserves to be fked up in a very bad way

Imagine if the pilot had actually been blinded, the scrote wouldnt be able to judge what would blind or cause issues to a flight crew, afterall he is a thick scumbag. Say the crew did loose control etc? How many lives could have been lost?

All down to some little thinking he is smart and hard...

Yep. I can tell laser light because it seems to sparkle - dust particles I think.

The large majority of lasers being bought by youngsters are capable of blinding, permanently. Even the weaker ones are capable of popping balloons.

Where does it say what the laser devise was? The pointer comment was speculation wasn't it?

I speculated it was a pointer as this seems most likely.

Anyone who had access to a proper laser would, I think, have more common sense than to point it at planes.

I'm trying to work out the geometry of how someone can blind the pilot of a jet aircraft. Surely he's sitting up high, looking only forward. Wouldn't a miscreant have to be at the same level as a plane to get the beam in?

confused

You can buy lasers a lot more powerful than a presentation pointed very easily on eBay and the like, apparently it's also possible to modify them to make them even more powerful.

One of them would certainly be powerful enough to temporarily blind someone.

I didn't think proper lasers could be bought on the open market. Knowing pikeys though, it was possibly a medical or an optical laser stolen from a hospital etc.

To quote the latest Directorate of Aviation Regulation & Safety Feedback Bulletin:

Just before the base leg turn, a Lynx Mk3 was illuminated with a green laser for about one second. The handling pilot sufferred mild discomfort in the left eye but the aircraft commander was unaffected. The aircraft was illuminated again several seconds later. ATC were informed and the approximate position of the source of the laser was passed to the local police. This is an ongoing problem particualrly in the Salsibury Plain area. If you are illuminated with a laser or powerful light from the ground within the UK, you should report the approximate position of the source to ATC, who will then pass the information to the local police.

As it happens to fall within my current job remit, I followed this up and discovered that on Salisbury Plain alone this happens AT LEAST once a week and often more frequently.

It is difficult to comprehend just how stupid some people can be!
