I've been on the London underground when it's as bad. Not every day though I'll grant.
Personally I don't think there is anything quite as scary as just finding yourself lifted off your feet, just by the weight of people behind pushing you into a closed space.
The really odd thing though is when you're inside, all contorted into some micro space. By virtue of the packing you're struggling not to look into someones ear. It's probably only two inches directly in front of your nose.
The alternative is to turn your head at an awkward angle and look at the forehead of the person opposite, and they're less than 8" away. You can barely contain your relief, when somehow into that 8" space someone else's hand becomes free and unfurls a copy of Metro, one handed, as only a commuter has the practice, and skill, to do.
As the train hurtles through it's humid claustrophobic tunnel smelling of stale sweat and electricity, you slowly realise that you have no need to fight for handspace on the rail today, so that you might not fall, when the train crashes to a stand in the station.
I'm really quite glad I don't do that any more.
