Got home this evening and one of my neighbours has popped a note through the door to let me know they found my cat who sadly died. Not unexpected as she was roughly 21 years old and had started to slow down a lot in the last few weeks. I think she just went off to find somewhere quiet to die, I am told cats do that sometimes. I got her from a rescue home 13 years ago next month so I was not sure exactly how old she was. Great little beastie was Milo, terribly affectionate, a little shy sometimes around new people but never took her more than a few minutes with a new person to make friends, as long as someone was there with her who she knew. In all the years I had her, she never so much as scratched a person or single item of furniture, never climbed on a surface she should not, never did a single thing that could be viewed as misbehaving and was kind of dog like in the way she would greet me when I got home.

Poor little Milo, I really will miss her. She was totally healthy all her life and while she had a horrible time before the rescue home got her, I honestly think she was a very happy little cat, she was certainly well loved by me, my mates, partners and pretty much everyone in the little close in which I live. She was aways floating from one house to the next to see who was about if she wanted some affection and if I was not home. Its kind of sweet that several of my neighbours seem almost as upset as I am.

Started wondering if I should get another pet. I cant for the next 2 months as I have just started a new role and am travelling a lot and anyway, I don't want something else just yet. I wish I could have a dog but I just don't think it is right as I am often out for 10-12 hours a day, and often I leave by 8 and don't get home until after 12:00 if I am going out from the office. I am considering moving and I don't think that it is right to keep cats in a flat so I don't think a cat is the way to go as I could well be in a flat at some stage. I hate chinchillas and want something with a personality so hamsters etc are out! Any ideas?

Goodbye Milo - hope you got as much happiness from me as I got from you.

Sorry for what is about the most dull post ever I suspect, but just kind of thinking about her and posting seemed like a good idea!

Feel for you, very sorry.

Do you like reptiles or birds? They are ideally suited to being left for long periods. A parrot or budgie could even talk back!

Don't do it to a dog - they need a lot of attention.

Feel for you chap, I lost a dog 7 2 cats in the space of 8 months, it tears you in two. Still got 4 cats and dreading it all over again whenever that happens.

I'm the same as you with the dog bit. Cats do there own thing but dogs need that attention.

Two dogs that can survive on your working style are either Pekingnese (small dog) & Greyhound (large dog). Both need attention, but can happlily live with your lifestyle, and you wont be being cruel.

Good luck chap

Thanks everyone, under all the debates and spirited discussions, PH'ers are a soppy lot at heart I think!

Milo never really liked chasing mice much but right now, I am fairly certain she is watching the world go by while lazing in the warm engine cover of a Lotus, the seat of a convertable with the roof of or drapped over the handlebars of a motorbike - odd little cat that she was! I honestly think I managed to get the only petrol-head cat on earth. She was small, a bit lazy, either pretty stupid or very smart (never could work it out!), very cute looking and generaly a lovely little beastie. Never liked cats much but ended up with her as she seemed to latch onto me at the rescue home and when I tried to put her back in the cage she looked so sad I ended up taking her home. Oddly, she apparantly hated people in general and kids specifically or so I was told by the cat home who thought they would never be able to re-house her. Can't say I know why cos from the moment the girl was seeing at the time picked her up onwards she seemed to love attention and affection. I guess she just liked me or my ex. Well, either way, at least she had a good, long life and I think she was a happy little cat. Hope so.

Rupert - I did rather wonder how on earth you managed to loose 72 cats so fast!

Ah bless. Not nice whern they go, but think of all the happy moments. Think how happy he was, and that's because you loved hom and looked after him. He might never have had that if it wasn't for you. 21 is a blinding age for a cat. I lost one of mine 2 weeks ago at around 12...Liver issues. I was also gutted, but remember he was a lovely rescue cat who was spoilt rotten, and always purring looking for a cuddle! Bless.

Chin up, and get another one. Another cat that can be taken out of a shelter or from an abusing houshold and placed in a loving home like yours is a great thing.

Cheers.

Losing a pet is really hard - Allow yourself to grieve and dont be one of those people who says to themselves it was just a cat and bottles it all up. Remember the good times - they'll make you smile.

You have my sympathies

Its awful when a pet dies, never easy. I felt like a complete softie when I tried and failed to hold back tears, a dying rodent in my hands at the vet. Chin up mate smile It does seem to take a while to heal and get over the loss, another cat sounds like a good idea. All pets are great, and good for us, as they give without ever expecting anything in return, just your love & trust.

Sad but a good innings. Our 20 year old had to be put down last week. Just gave up so time to get the vet over. Shouldn't have got past three when he lost a fight with a car. As said, well looked after and you know they were happy.

Two new ones from the cats home now.

Sorry to hear this. You clearly gave her a fantastic life as her age shows & you can be proud of that.
Its always devastating when pets die & i dread the day our retriever passes away.

Sorry to hear this.

We lost one of ours a couple of years ago. Just imagine him teaching the other three naughty tricks.
