Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has said she does not want Glitter to be able to travel abroad once back in the UK.

Ms Smith said: "We need to control him, and he will be, once he returns to this country."

She said Glitter will be required to sign the sex offenders' register and will have to notify the authorities if he wants to travel abroad.

"It certainly would be my view that with the sort of record that he's got, he shouldn't be travelling anywhere in the world. I want Gary Glitter to be controlled whilst he's here and I don't want him to be able to go anywhere else in the world in order to abuse children."

On the principle of things what right does our govt have to stop him from travelling or going abroad?

Clearly an odious man and Yes control him in this country but is it going too far to remove his passport?

If they remove his passport after serving his time for his crime, who else might they refuse to travel?

Let him come back. But instead of the big police security presence at the airport to protect him, send a crowd of nasty blokes to meet him and take him for a quiet word....
Filthy sicko.

Dangerous precedent. No doubt a depraved mofo but he has committed no arrestable offence in the UK. Not sure it would even be legal for the Govt to do this under the Rehabiitation of OFfenders Act. Plenty of work for the Yooman Rights lawyers in store methinks.

I doubt he'll even look at anyone under 21 here knowing the consequences.

What right does he have to a passport? None. I support them on this. No peado should be allowed to travel to countries where thet can exploit their anonimity and lax local laws/powers.

Before anyone starts, I think he's depraved for what he did, however, doing the devil's advocate thing....why let murders have a passport? they can go abroad and be anonomous to commit further crimes, people who commit GBH etc etc.

Maybe it's time the had a look at what happens with your passport if you're sent to prison?

He has no convictions in this country, so what power is Ms Smith going to invoke to prevent him travelling? The Anti-Terrorism Act?

I thought he'd done a stretch for possession of child pornography a few years back.

Those convicted of football hooliganism can be barred from travelling to matches abroad so I don't see it being a problem to enforce this for other offences too. Whether they can confiscate his passport I'm not sure but personnlly I'd have no problem with it.

Why not surgically remove his cock and balls then hand them back to him on a plate with his passport? You cant deny someone freedom to travel.

Yeah, he did, hence leaving UK. He is on the register as such.

Also, if you are abroad, UK citizens our laws still apply to you in respect S.A.O's which this now is.

A serious thought with respect to his passport though is that whilst we would let him leave the country, it is the receiving country that decides if he would be let in. Hence travel visa's etc so if he kept his passport it would be down to his destination to decide whether to let him in in light of his past. Look at the US's travle restrictions.....

I was rather hoping you'd arrange a helicopter flight for him.... about 15 miles out over the north sea, open the door, quick push, "ta,ta peado!"

They were openly accused of this on Radio 4 this morning. Something along the lines of "Don't you accept that its a bit convenient that you announce these measures on the day Gary Glitter is due back in the country"
