Just interested to see what people think now that a tie has become almost optional in todays work environment.

Never worn a tie to work in any of my jobs. Current job involves me sitting in an office on my own so doesn't really matter what I wear, don't meet any clients.

When I go up to head office I'll normally don a suit and maybe a tie. Last time I went up there it had been so long I'd lost the damn thing though.

I wore a tie for my first few weeks in this receptionist/admin job; but on realising we don't have clients in the building, I don't bother with a tie, top button, or tucked shirt anymore.

Infact I'm heavily considering losing the pants as well!

In the office - never.

Visiting clients - depends on their dress code. I've done it unshaved in a polo shirt and chinos and also suited and booted.

The default clothing for client visits would be the suit, shirt, tie etc.

Part of uniform issue for male staff where I work. Women are exempt, though. rolleyes

I hate ties with a passion. Last time I wore one outside work was my wedding.

Always. Company dress code and a real no-no to not wear one.

Mined ewe, we wear them round the head, Rambo style. Even the ladies.

Business casual here, like most other financial institutions. I only wear a tie when being interviewed.

I used to, religiously.

The firm I work at now is rather more laid back and no-one pulls you up on dress. So, it's suit and shirt most days, with tie if I'm seeing clients, have meetings or am in court.

and McDonalds doesn't really enforce a strict dress code either, does it?

I was wearing my enormous fleece coat at my desk yesterday because I was so bloody cold. One of the managers gave me a quizzical look; I just said "I'm cold", he sort of gave that "Oh right" nod and buggered off.

Hell no.

What is this obsession with putting a brightly coloured piece of fabric round your neck?

Likewise. Always used to, but as fewer customers demanded it, we stopped doing so too.

I've left that company now however, and the company I'm joining appears to have a "tie always" policy. It'll be nice to be expected to look smart again. I'll make the effort and feel better for it no doubt, although if their standards relax, then I'll enjoy that too. The thing is "change"... I like it.

Always...and always with a suit.

Aside from looking smarter (image is half of communication, after all...), it helps in that work can never tell when you're going for an interview! biggrin

It's called "stupidity" and humans are very, very good at it.
