I have a detached garage, single brick construction, concrete floor, with up and over doors. I am looking at putting doors into one side of it, can anyone tell me if an RSJ/lintel is an essential for a gap of 1200mm? I can't find any 'concrete' (sorry) guidelines anywhere.

Thanks

if there already is an aperture then you won't need to add a lintel, it should already be there

If there is going to be brickwork above the doors, then it would be a good idea to have something to hold them up other than the door frame!

It's only going to cost a few quid from wickes for a concrete lintel that'll slot in though, and isn't going to be hard to fit at all. Couple of props to hold the brickwork above up, knock out to 150mm minimum past the opening either side and sling it in with a bit 'o muck.

The existing aperture, at the front, will remain. The doors are going into a side wall.

ah, you're forming a new opening - lintel definitely required

Get to your local builders merchant and get a "Birtley MBL Lintel". It will look better than a RSJ/Conc lintel on a single skin brickwall (and probially cheaper). Also easier to install.
