This is pretty sad. "Re-Education through Labour" for women in their 70s. However, it is at least hopeful that there are Chinese lawyers and activists speaking out on their behalf, as well as the son of one of the sentenced:

Nope, I can't defend this - but then I can't defend Gitmo or water boarding either.

Hi Colonial wavey This centers around people having their homes removed to make room for the olympics with little or no compensation. This has been boiling for awhile....seems to be coming to a head.

Not related to your point Jimbo (sorry), I did PMSL at Bush's speech in China about how outrageous the Chinese were for arresting people and detaining them without charge.

That man really is an idiot.

In relation to your point, yes it's an outrage, but every country has been guilty of this at some point. We've done globally, you chaps did it with the Indians (sorry "Native Americans"). ETA but that doesn't make it right.

How many Iraqi's and Afghanistani's do you think have lost their homes/lives over the last few years?

Does the fact that they were pointed-out to you by an American make China's abuses of its people any more acceptable?

Thought not. Now grow up, for heaven's sake.

Good points. However, your arrest comment does not aply to our own citizens as the Chinese do.
BTW, the "Native Americans", several of which are friends of mine, prefer to be called "Indians"....much to the horror of the PC warriors.

Why be so predictable? The thread was about China, not the US, Russia, Israel, the UK, Iraq, etc. Why is it that certain people jump to comparing/bashing non-subject nations without even making a comment on the "thread nation"?
ETA: Sorry, Nick F. beat me to the correction....with a higher degree of eloquence at that. wink

I'm fully aware of China's Human rights record. I also have no issues with Americans. What I do object to is that self serving idiot lecturing people on Human rights when his incessant sabre rattling is one of the reasons why we're now embroiled in two wars (sorry police actions) that we haven't a cat in hells chance of resolving. Both of which have seen gross breaches of Human Rights.

I'm not the one that needs to grow up.

Maybe acknowledge a few of you own countries atrocities to show a few posters you are posting with impartiality. Otherwise to those spoiling for a fight it comes across as "my country is better than yours", especially considering we are talking about one of your countries' main rivals.

The American to whom I was referring was our own Jimbeaux, not George W Bush.

so they were imprisoned for repeatedly applying for permission to protest in Olympic parks? Imagine living under the kind of repressive regime where you have to apply for permission to protest...scratchchin

I have done that, it does not seem to matter. I am simply posting a news story for discussion. Plus, what the U.S / U.K may do wrong is pointed out by many others so often that me doing so would be a pale action. I also like the way you call something we do "atrocities" when compared to the severity and frequency of such acts by certain other nations.
