I have a BA flight in October where the luggage allowance is one bag; max 23kg.

I can buy another 23kg bag for £24 each way which seems very reasonable compared to the budget carriers but does anyone know know if I can then take just one 46kg suitacase or does it have to be 2 x 23kg

I don't really want to have to buy two smaler suitcaes when I have my one monster one.

They'll refuse to accept any single item over 32kg.
Baggage handlers are deemed to be at risk if they have to lift anything heavier.

Two smaller ones. The blokes that chuck your bags onto the various trolleys/conveyor belts/combined harvesters won't want to pick up anything too heavy.

You'll pay for the extra case though - its only one per passenger.

Your ticket will say 23kg but they will allow you up to 32kg until November I think, when they will start charging. Just been through all this as I'm getting married abroad next month, flying BA and figuring out how to get all the suits/dresses out.

Its all here

As said before, after Nov 2008. The max bag weight is 23KG, you will have to re-pack if your bag is over 23kg or pay extra. They will not accept a bag over 32kg even if you pay the access.

They are strict, I was at 34kg and I had to take 2kg out of my bag and carry it in hand luggage.

Until november BA will accept bags up to 32kg with no charge.
From november, anything over 23kg is subject to a charge.

Why people travel with so much luggage is a mystery to me. Carry on only is the way to go, and packing so you arent taking everything and the kitchen sink which you wont use anyway. Then you have to lug it about at either end which is just a pain in the ass.
I am allowed a whopping 3x32kg on my long hauls in BA club world...yet it is extremely rare that I check anything at all in.

I went to sicily a few weeks ago and we had an appalling luggage allowance, one pair of shorts in my case and i would of been over the limit. To this day i have never been charged by them and my cases have been well over sometimes. strange...

I used to do business trips with hand luggage only - until they banned carry-on liquids, meaning I ended up checking in a bag, just so I could take my shower bag with me.

I admit that made it a little more of a pain in the ass....
Get a large ziploc bag and some small empty 50ml &100 ml bottles (can get them from superdrug), transfer your stuff into them, and you can still fit a fair amount of toiletries stuff in there- I manage to fit the contents of the washbag I used to take in it with no problems.

I travel with my mountainbike alot, not unusual for me to take 50-60kg all in.

I've never had my hand luggage weighed( i think the limit is supposed to be 5kg) If worried about weights I'll stick all my heavy stuff in there.

Also for hand luggage you're allowed one personal item + 1 bag. Taking a suit carrier and a bag on board never seems to present any problems for me.

Have you ever tried to carry a 46kg suitcase?

Our recent BA trip to Spain allowed carry on luggage with unlimited weight , so long as you could lift it into the o/head locker .

Obviously size was restricted to the normal .

I've travelled to Canada this year taking two mountain bikes (that weren't light wink.

I was very lucky to have got away with the trip out only costing me £60 as the total weight was around 42 kgs for the one box. I then had a further 32kg kit bag. They warned me of the weight issue, and that they could refuse to carry anything over 32kg.

Luckily a little charm and niceness to the lady got me on.

However coming back (and with more coming back) I got bent over and raped, the canadian handlers not liking me at all (fair enough I suppose as I was taking the piss a little): $400 later I was on, and with some seriously heavy hand luggage!

Annoying thing though, one set of scales in Canada was showing the box I was unpacking was lighter, stick it on another, and it amazingly added 5 kilos mad

I learnt a hard lesson there biggrin

That looks good, 32kg each will be enough. I can survive on one pair of lamy shorts and a folding toothbrush but Mrs B and B needs three changes of clothes a day (she must sweat alot that's all I can say).
