Look at any PH thread these days and there will be a reference to 'Chavs'. Some threads are dedicated to 'Chavs', including this one. The main cause of Britain's decline is apparently 'Chavs'. It's wall to wall Chavs, a Chav-fest, Chav this, Chav that. Chav Chav Chav.

But say 5 years ago 'Chavs' were unheard of.

So where have they come from?

They were about 5 years ago, probably started about the turn of the decade. Before then we just called them townies, exactly the same thing.

When i was at school they were called 'pikeys' even though pikeys are more known as travellers.
There was a boy at school (1996-2001) called Kenny Chavush and no one ever made fun of his name because the word chav was never used or known. He was very chavy aswell.

I think chavs have been around for a long while, it's just their reference had changed, I remember my parents refering to 'yobs' in the 80's.

I think the word 'chav' originates from the Roman word for 'lad'.

They've always been around but came to prominence on or about 1st May 1997.

The modern day Chav has arisen in parallel with the growth of welfare provision.

When i was a lad, there was a group of people we'd call townies or waynes.... typical sat night uniform of chino's short-sleeved check shirt and pasty-shoes accompanied by short spiked type hair.
Drag loads and had fights... but these lot worked because the welfare state was not as generous as it is now.

The characteristic of the Chav is the complete lack of a working-mentality, a person who sees life as two paths, one being work/career the other being benefits. A person who could do nothing but unskilled manual work. And who is amoral.

But being a Chav should not be confused with the adoption of a Chav style. Many people for odd reasons like to dress like the Chav whilst not actually being one.

The term chav's comes from "Cheltenham Averag"
Honestly if you go out in Cheltenham - as i did a lot as a friend of mine was @ uni there, there is hundreds of them!
When i was at school they were called Townies.

I like to refer to them as chav's, pikeys, or even northerners.

They have always been around.

In times of yore, however, famine, pestilence and the odd war kept their numbers to a reasonable level, and the system kept those that remained in their place.

Now we give them free healthcare to prolong their worthless lives and fund their feral work-dodging lives whilst paying for lefty idiots to ensure 'they know their rights innit'.

I second that, when I was at school there (around '94-95) the word was in use, and sadly there are millions there.

Before "chav" became a common term, I used it synonymously with "pikey" or "gypo", and that's what I had always understood it to mean - a gypsy.

Charver is, I believe, romany for 'child' so the pikey etymology is plausible.
