Might conceivably be who we are. 'Whom we are' is grammatically incorrect.

Interesting that with all the people represented there, thats what you pick up on.

Our most successful games in generations, a chance to host a games with genuine friendliness and talent instead of mega-bucks - and instead of being optimistic you're sgging it off already rolleyes

Your attitude is the true image of Britain unfortunately...

I thought our part of the ceremony was really good! It must have taken a tough decision to get Jimmy Paige playing an iconic rock anthem. If they wanted to play it safe then a bit of British classical music and Catherine bloody Jenkins doing a bit of opera would have been used. I reckon they did a good job.

I agree. If we can now do the same for the opening ceremony with with the same simplicity/cost and get our field athletes to perform to the same exceptional level as cycling, swimming, sailing etc etc then job done.

I thought it was great too, read about it in the paper last night and was looking forwards to it since. The contrast with the way the Chinese did it was really good, I'd love to be part of the team planning the opening ceremony. Whereas the Chinese was all a bit prim and proper (if very spectacular) I'm sure ours will have more wit and humour.

Guy in a wheelchair? Don't the paralympics start now? What a crappy thing to say.

Maybe all the whingers and knockers can book their 2 weeks away now to make sure they're not here to spoil it for those of us who are really looking forward to it.

I just dont think you can justify spanking £9+ bill on a sporting event... However, I am in favour of the shi7 areas of London being made livable, but other than the, money down the drain... Do the Citys really make their money back in revenue?

Whats it ultimately going to DO for us though?

I struggle to understand how these preening athletes who get as much effort and money lavished on them as they do are seen as "heroes" by a glitz blinded few when we have guys out in Iraq and Afghanistan fighing for their lives in the name of "security" and "freedom" ( Bullst to that i say) all for the paltry sum of 38 quid a day, a lack of basic equipment and big "fk you" when they get back to this dumpstation. Heck they dont even have any reliable transport to get them back here with, yet for some obscure to me reason, its "worth" spunking 9 billion (and the rest) up some bog wall to make a few athletic types look "good".

Thats what we are unfortunately about; fked up priorities.

I read an article about this the other day - it was at the dentists though and I can't find it online now.

Some cities such as Toronto spend years paying back, Athens has dealt with it badly as many purpose built venues are now unused and have been for 4 years.

Other places like Seoul and Barcelona benefitted hugely from the games. Depends on how it's organized.

Found it! http://www.independent.co.uk/extras/features/after...

Having just flown back from China this morning I would say a lot of the success of the Games as an Event in its totality is down to the volunteers. I hope we will find the same number of people in London/UK with the same attitude in being pleasant and as helpful as the Chinese were to us.
Also having had a very good experience getting through Chinese check in and passport control when accredited media were effectively segregated and put through our own chanel or indeed shown to the front of the queue (was happy to wait) to be greeted by a passport officer at Heathrow who at best could be described as rude the gulf in attitude was massive.
OK the Chinese were primed to make it a good experience for us and yes there is still the old culture behind the gloss so it will be an interesting comparison in 4 years time

They must have rolled out the friendlier type of the occasion then. I've been through Chinese passport control dozens of times, and it never gets better! I half expect to be dragged off and shot with the looks they give you. Coming back to Heathrow, however vile and dirty, its a little refreshing to at least have the girl on passport control smile at you!

WTF is this thread about? Reading what people have posted, it sounds like this infuriating business of ramming the fking 2012 games down our throats from well before the 2008 lot had even started has gone so far as to hold an opening ceremony for them four years early in the middle of someone else's bash.

It's bloody ridiculous, even in the middle of the 2008 games all we get is wall to wall 2012 2012 2012 FFS. I usually manage to ignore the publicity for stuff I don't care about but there's been so bloody much of this that I haven't been able to and it's only going to get worse and there's still four bloody years of it to come. I'm off to Sellafield to find some nasty radioactive stuff to spread on the site that will take them more than 4 years to clean up.
