Pikeys broke into our yard to nick diesel on Saturday. Their vans were spotted leaving the compound by another cab company owner who we share the site with...

My controller went outside to check our cars with this bloke when they started getting shot at with an air rifle (I know, but it's still not nice!)

I get a phone call, and get back to the office in about three minutes and seal the gate off with my car. Police arrive (who I flagged down en route).

More police arrive with a dog van and a meat wagon.

More shots at us, and some hitting the police van. Dog has a sniff around (The place is a country park, so I have no idea how they expected the dog to pick up 'eu de gypo' without knowing what to sniff for) and they conclude that they can't find anyone.

They haven't looked at half the compound, and have stood huddled behind the meat wagon for half hour. 20 coppers, cowering behind a van.

Then they decide there is no proof of anyone being on site, and no evidence of anyone shooting at us rolleyes

As they said that, a shot hit the wall behind us and they asked us to go inside in case anyone got shot while they were in attendance - as it wouldn't look good.

Not really happy with their performance, we asked them what they intended to do.

'Everyone go indoors, and we'll make a thorough search of the compound without any danger to you, and we can let the sniffer dog do it's thing again without distraction.'

Literally, my arse had just touched my chair in the office when the phone rings to tell me all the police had left the compound.

I go out to check and the pricks have left the gates wide open ranting

So clearly anyone that was on site, have now been able to escape.

Extremely pissed off.

Seems like a dereliction of duty to me - there should have been armed cops on the site, and I dare say this warranted a visit from the force helicopter more than some chav in a stolen Saxo!

It's the second time in a month that someone has been taking pot shots at us. They turned up with armed response and a chopper last time, but they'd held a 'tactical' meeting in the pub car park 2 miles away for over an hour before going in to look... fking idiots rolleyes

First off, glad you and your controller are OK....

...but wtf were the police playing at? At the scene of the crime, with the crime still in progress (and a potentially life-threatening crime at that!), but deciding to go off to get doughnuts (presumably wink ). Beggars belief..

wtf are you paying your taxes for?

Definitely worth contacting your MP.

I've had an MP give the chief constable a dressing down in the past when the police refused to act while a crime was in progress.

There's also the IPCC...

You *have* to follow this up with a formal complaint.

If a shot or two rang out whilst plod were in attendance, I would like to see their statements to the complaints panel, and how they can justify not fully searching, and not calling in air support. (I suppose they will use the old "it wasn't available" etc , but then evidence that it wasn't available would need to be produced)

Absolutely shocking.

Don't stop at your local MP, or IPCC either. Send a copy to the bloody Home Secretary. The more of a stink you kick up, the more likely you are to get a decent response.

Dave, your yard obviously looks too plush and is attracting attention. You need a more run-down, back-street place to operate from. wink

Also the more stink I kick up, the less support we will have from the police in the area. We're flipping the taxi trade on it's head in the next couple of months and will need the authorities onside. It's got the potential to get ugly frown

Tell me about it. In the last few weeks we've had two toughened seperation screens kicked through with attacks on drivers. In one of these instances it took 5 cops to arrest a crazed nutter. Then they let him off with a 'caution' rolleyes and told the driver he will have to take said nutter to a civil court to sue for the damage. Where's our protection FFS, someone is going to get badly hurt soon.

Glad you're OK.

Understood.... I appreciate that it has the potential to give you an "unofficial" black mark with local plod.

Is there anything you can do with the physical security side of things to stop chancers and pikeys getting at stuff in the yard?

They probably got a tip off for something more urgent. Perhaps a wild motorist doing 31 mph near by. Or some paperwork back at the station.

A mate has solved a similar problem (diesel theft) by building a second fence inside the outer one, and filling the gap with razor wire. Then he has dogs running free in his yard outside normal hours. Never shot at so far as I know.

Can't believe the response of the police 2nd time round (they certainly did the right thing first time.)

If it is an air-rifle they are shooting at you with, then they will be in quite a predictable place given the effective range of an air rifle - Working back from where the shots hit - is there a hedgeline or some tree cover nearby, outbuildings?

Get some beefed up security and if they come back and shoot from the same area again you will know approx where they are and IF the plod or some "hired help" were to turn up you would be able to cut off their retreat/get them in the meat wagon/break out the angle grinder and thumbscrews

Failing which its a shame you couldnt call these guys for some help

I often get the feeling the Police are almost happy to leave the pikeys alone to do whatever they damn well please. That also goes for local councils who just sit back and do nothing while they dump crap everywhere, even on there own sites and right outside their sites. In short, it's easier to chase people who you know will pay stupid fines for over filling a bin etc , and not these scum that deserve nothing better than a gas chamber.
