I think you are looking for shot blasting supplies, as apposed to sand.

Loads on google,

Depends on how long you want to use the grit for

Sand will do the odd small thing but if you are doing alot and want to reuse the grit then get proper grit

Also depends on what you are blasting and how gentle you want to be.

i.e. If you want to strip 2 layers of paint from a metal object coated in 5 layers of paint without damaging the other three then you would look at a sand/grit/equipment different to that which you would use to strip millimetres thickness of rust.

Due to Silica content,do not use any old sand, Silicosis kills! There are various blast mediums available of different grades. from steel shot to powdered egg shells! (they blast cleaned the walls of the Tower of London with that IIRC) What you want depends on what you want to do with it and where you are going to use it.

Further edit to add Scangrit and Barton Abrasives are 2 manufacturers that I remember(just watch out goolging "copper sg" )stuff i have used on the finer side have been aluminium oxide, olivine, and garnet. you can also get silica free sand
