I completed an online application form yesterday for a well known PC retailer. After I had submitted the application it asked me to answer a number of questions regarding my race, nationality, disabilities etc. I beleive this is the same with most aplication forms now.

Forgive my ignorance but surely the most effective way of being an equal opportunities employer is not to ask for this type of information so people are employed solely on their skills, experience and merits. So can someone explain of what use this infomation is to employers wanting to give equal opportunites?

I am not interested in hearing about peoples race prejudices it is a genuine question to which I am sure there is a simple answer.

AFAIK there is no legal requirement for you to complete that part of the form. Employers use it for statistical returns to prove that they are meeting "quotas"....

Maybe you should apply to a non-PC retailer instead?

They will use it to ensure they don't discriminate, i.e. they will interview a set number of Asians, disabled people, women etc... then hire the same smelly, spotty, white 20 year old male as usual. biggrin
