Planning a birthday holiday for a lady friend
Discussion
I'm thinking Scandinavia or the typical hot spots like NYC/Venice/Rome, Paris = too close to home so no go there.
Basically, I need a place that we can go to for the weekend that's respectable in terms of price yet still modern/classy/elegant. Somewhere different that would make you think, "This is like nowhere I've ever been". At the same time as that, it needs to have creatue comforts like good clothes shops near by as she loves to spend on clothes & the like. Along with that, if it has naturally beautiful surroundings (Think lakes/mountains/hills), then thats perfect.
So I need quite an all-rounder in terms of location ladies & gents, any ideas?

From what you just described, go to Slovenia. Nobody ever really thinks about visiting Slovenia, but it's lovely. Head to the capital, Ljubljana, and you'll see it's unlike any other capital city in the world. Loads of nice restaurants, bars and shops, but it's mostly pedestrianised. There's no corporations/high rise in sight and I promise you'll be (pleasantly) surprised by it. It's very small considering it's a capital city (large town sized I'd say) but it's a good place to spend a couple of days.
From Ljubljana, make sure you head out to the surrounding countryside and take in all the spectacular views and scenery (Lake Bled and surrounding area is particularly lovely - stunning views all round)

Take a look at the 'Natural Beauties' section here
PS: I was there for my second visit last month, and the weather was absolutely beautiful.

Interesting suggestion. I'll do a bit of research into it later when I get home. Out of curiosity, what's the language barrier like? From Ljubljana, make sure you head out to the surrounding countryside and take in all the spectacular views and scenery (Lake Bled and surrounding area is particularly lovely - stunning views all round)

Not a problem. It's full of German businessmen that work in Slovenia, and Slovenian businessmen that work in Germany. They seem to settle on English as a compromise.
