York council, those genius members of society they are, have in their infinite wisdom decide to reject plans to create thousands of jobs.

York is losing employment and has lost lots already.

Aviva is one of the main employers and has already lost hundreds of jobs to India and Pakistan.

Shepherds and Persimmon are cutting down due to lack of construction industry.

Terrys the site of the build employed 300 people and has been sat empty for 4 years.

However on the flip side the council want to build themselves new offices on the site. To leave their existing offices empty. Surely a neutral party should be involved, not the morons that run the council.

Our local council rejected plans for a little Costa or something saying there were already enough local coffee shops and they didnt want those sorts coming in!

In other news the same week the Towns largest employer after many years of trying to get PP to build on some greenbelt land had their application accepted, The newer revised plans also had some new council offices into the bargain!

The local rag never did a story about the new council offices although there are now big banners on the old council offices "WE ARE MOVING!!"

Costa

New offices!

You'll always have businesses playing the 'jobs' card to brow beat the planners so you don't know how genuine the claim is.

[I say this generally, as I have no detailed knowledge of the situation]

But he's a developer and stands to make a lot of money from the development. He would say all that.

No that is what the planning application had on it.

Of course he is going to profit, he is a dumb businessman if he doesn't

But that's my point. Any developer will show how his development can benefit the locality as ammunition for the planning process. I doubt he cares about the knock-on effects such as job creation once he's sold/leased his units and apartments.

In any case, would jobs really be created or would they just move from elsewhere?

Well with so many people losing jobs in York, yes it is kind of needed.

It is also the factor that the council officials approved it. The councillors who want a new office didn't approve it.

Personally I now refuse to buy any product marked "Terry's" and would reject any application myself. The Parent company saw an oppotunity to make a quick buck and anything that hinders it or the people who bought it deserve all they get!
