Is it going to be worth keeping a city there?

The only shock is that the BBC appear to have reported it without blaming "Climate Change".....

It's worth leaving it, as long as we can leave most of the French there!?!? biggrin

I think the mayor is doing the right thing, what with the amount of death that Katrina caused.

As to is it right to have the city there - possibly not, but don't we always have similar situations every flood with York? I'm sure the residents of New Orleans want the city to be saved

I think that it will become obvious over the next few days whether or not it is practical to continue to maintain a settlement in New Orleans.

If it is simply too hard to move back then people won't.

If Hurricanes like Katrina and Gustav are becoming the norm and can be expected annually or biannually then it will be impossible to maintain a city...it won't be possible to repair it before the next one. If that continues to happen for long enough it will be abandoned.

But that hasn't happened yet.

Why didn't they just build flood defences that could withstand this? Seems obvious but...

Lord, yes. This is going to be a real trial for everyone in the area. And where the hell do you absorb a complete city full of people? Let's hope that it is less bad than it appears at the moment...

bit like holland being told they are going to get a 50 foot storm surge at least twice per year, new orleans is a huge place and so lots of coastline to defend

know some guy on another forum, they have just finished repairing their house and they are in an area 10 foot under mean sea level

he went offline a few days ago, yes they could rebuild it 10 times and have the same thing happen during the reconstruction, time to move to higher ground for sure

I didn't quite understand the statement the mayor made on TV about this last night. He indicated the number of Police and National Guard personnel that would be available for "protection" if Gustav hit NO this time. Protection against what exactly? The weather?

I think he meant if the storm was not as bad as predicted, the soldiers would protect property from looters etc.

In other words...if you decide to brave the storm out and survive it, you will probably get shot by the national guard the first time you leave your house :P

Not that that is relevant, this time it is the white bit being hit.

I was watching the evacuation on Sky News this morning. It must be a terrifying thing to go through and your heart really does go out to those affected - not just on New Orleans but Mexico, Cuba et al. Fingers crossed that it isn't as bad as they are expecting. Mother nature takes no prisoners.

Luckily fk off great big storms don't discriminate. They just blow the st out of everyone whatever colour their skin might be. Good, huh? They even make landfall wherever they want - regardless of the kind of neighbourhood it is.
