I have been doing a bit of DIY in the garden today. This involved drilling a few holes in some concrete for about five minutes, and yes, it was noisy, what with hammer action and all that. No sooner had I finished than some neighbour from across the back starts shouting at me to stop, not in a reasoned polite manner, but full volume foul languaged shouting. Not had that around here before, it's a fairly nice area and we don't get this sort of thing. Anyway, I had stopped, so it didn't really matter. Then, a little later, had to jigsaw through a couple of bits of timber, again a bit noisy, but only for a few minutes. More abuse comes from across the back. I had finished anyway, so didn't respond.

Thing is though, I made a bit of noise for less than ten minutes in the middle of the day, to get a few jobs done.

Is that really so unreasonable?

No - show him what is unreasonable and repeat the process at midnight.....

bks is it. He should wind his neck in. I put up with car alarms, barking dogs, chainsaws, mowers, and all kinds of other noisy st and I don't complain. Quid pro quo when I need to tune up a car, I will happily rev the tits off it if necessary for a few minutes without feeling guilty.

ok I felt a little guilty when working on the Trans Am and the TVR

no, im sure you have some more cutting or grinding or drilling to do, or some alternative music you can listen to at your one person garden party. He's the one thats unreasonable. if it was 7am on a sunday then maybe, but late morning/lunch then no.

I'd have gone round there with the drill on a long extension cord and asked him if he was referring to me with those comments

Then walked off if he'd said yes

Get 2 stihl TS400's,

start them up.

cut concrete / metal for 1/2hr, both of full revs.

That should soon make him happy.

Does said neighbour have any children? Perhaps a son that one could send a belated birthday present - namely, a big f**k-off drum! wink

You have done nothing wrong, your neighbour is being unreasonable.

FFS, so he is not allowing you to live like the rest of us?

Give him what for, as already mentioned, at midnight biggrin

I am sure them few holes are not enough, and you need some more drilling.
the new holes have to be bigger, so you need a bigger drill.
Don't forget your ear defenders, because this new drill is loud.

You and start you work at 08:01 Sunday morning.

People get all nimby about this kind of thing, especially at the weekend. What time did you start at?

Imagine the outrage if you were building an extension or some other big project.

Does your drill have a button to 'lock' the trigger on? If so, switch on, leave by wall, go to shops for a while.

No, that's just normal activity that any householder may need to do from time to time. Shouting the odds and using obscene language instead of raising any concerns in a civilised way is potentially threatening behaviour however, or behaviour likely to result in a breach of the peace.

Folk are just so bloody intolerant and ignorant these days... I've got one brewing at the moment. Share a communal parking area with three other households and next door has unoffically 'extended' their garden onto what was originally laid out and planned as their allocated parking space. However, instead of accepting that they now have a bigger garden and must park elsewhere (ie on the road where there is not generally a problem), they insist on parking on the manouevering area that allows access to the other spaces, including mine (and my workshop etc). Obviously enough (you would think), this can make it difficult/impossible to gain access but polite requests to move obstructions are now being met with abuse and threats... add this to recent incident where my car has been covered with brick dust from a disc cutter being used next to it, and cement splashes from other building activity and we're heading for a serious fall out. Why is this stuff so difficult for some? confused

I avoid power tools on Sundays. If I had to do something very noisy on a Sunday, I would pop round to the neighbors before hand and let them know I was only going to disturb them for ten minutes or so. Most neighbors are grateful for the consideration.

In answer to your original post, yes you were being unreasonable in not warning the neighbors before hand. However, this does not warrant the expletives from your neighbor.

All in my opinion.

I would follow up your little bit of work with a stinking big bonfire - you may need to chuck a bit of old rubber on it to get some really nasty black smoke. smokin
