...What, precisely, is this meant to mean?

I found out today from a nice lady that she has been buying salt and rinse aid for the past 7 years, and failed to understand the concept of "3 in 1".

Any suggestions as to what the other 2 features in "3 in 1 dishwasher tablets" might be?

As you were!

Quite right, but... the rinse-aid in the 3-in-1 tablets seems to be next-to-useless, so I still use separate rinse aid periodically. Gets everything nice and dry, which the tablets alone certainly don't. smile

Pistonheads - dishwashing matters.

The other two are (tada!):
Salt and Rinse Aid.

If you are putting them in the machine separately, you can buy the cheaper tablets.

Absolutely, I have gone back to using Vanilla Finish, they are the only ones that will clean the outside casing of a carburettor like new nuts

3 in 1 tablets are lubricated with light machine oil so they slide about the inside of the dishwasher better.

Dishwashers aren't expensive to run.. Ours uses something like 14 litres of water and a 10 tablet for 8 settings.. smile

Doesn't it smell a bit 'girlie' in the workshop when reassembling?

I use Lidl's 'W5' tablets (includes glass protection and silver & stainless steel protection) - German engineering at its best!

The salt is needed to replenish the resin in the water softener, as this is an internal device adding salt to the wash chamber itself with a 3 in 1 tablet is a completely pointless exercise, the water for the softner comes from the mains and is not recycled, just anothher advertising gimmick im afraid
