Phones vs iPods for music

Has anyone ever noticed a difference in quality between a phone's music player and an iPod? Given the same song with the same sample rate of course.

I've got the latest Sony Walkman phone, which I'm very pleased with indeed, but have often wondered how it compares to a dedicated iPod or similar for quality. I compared my phone with a friend's iPod other day with £20 headphones and we couldn't tell the difference. I've now spend a lot more on a really decent set of headphones, so wondered if anyone else had compared the two and what their findings were?

How about a Sony Mp3 player? Makes the iPod seem like a childs toy SQ wise

I've done these sorts of comparisons on and off for years.

First one was with my SE W550 against the first gen iPod nano - the SE did (to my ears) sound better. Neither was anywhere near as good as my (now ancient) NetMD player though.

And latterly comparing my iPod against my old N73 (running on Moto S9 A2DP phones) was no comparison - the Nokia sounded much better.

But then the iPod isn't really sold for its sound quality.
