Land Rover is cutting back production, going on to a four-day week and suspending the night shift until the end of the year.

The credit crunch is being blamed, but you can also throw in the Government's soaring taxes on fuel and so-called 'gas guzzlers'.

Then there's the general hostility towards 4x4s, especially Range Rovers, which are blamed for everything from melting the ice caps to poisoning bay-bees in their pushchairs.

While self-righteous eco-warriors are vandalising Discoverys and ministers pile punitive taxes on owners in the name of saving the planet, no one stops to consider the economic consequences.

It may belong to the Indian firm, Tata, these days, but Land Rover is one of our few remaining world-class manufacturers.

Exports bring in vital foreign currency and keep 8,500 people employed directly, with at least the same number again working in dealerships and the supply chain.

Forcing every last Range Rover off the streets of Britain isn't going make the slightest bit of difference to 'global warming'.

And does anyone seriously believe that BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Toyota are going to stop making 4x4s?

But that won't stop the eco-loonies doing their worst to wreck a proud, profitable company and consign thousands of workers to the dole queue and their families to hardship - just so they can feel good about themselves.

Like all idealists, they profess to love the planet but really they hate people.

I can deal with MG/Rover going bust, TVR being sold out to a rich foreign playboy, Aston Martin being split between Ford and Prodrive and Rolls Royce being punted back and forth between BMW/VW, but there's no way I will accept what in my mind as the greatest british car manufacturer's demise largely due to our incompetent government and the ecomentalist greenie warriors.

It will be a sad day when Land Rover goes under frown

It's perpetuating stuff like this that could lead to the sad demise of the badge. I've owned Land Rovers for 15yrs, my dad for 30 years and neither of us have had a sniff of trouble. Helped plenty of people out with them though. Awesome vehicles.

Crikey, do 4x4 owners really get their vehicles vandalised by eco warriors?

Yep, but mainly in upper to middle class areas of our wonderful cities - typically perpetrated by the misguided children of professional parents who want to rebel against everything that they stand for. Shame, of all of the eco-warriors that I have had the misfortune to see / meet, almost all go home to a nice loverly gravel lined executive style home in the 'burbs.

I've never had mine vandalised but I get an awful lot of nasty looks and the odd comment. Somebody told me in the pub last night that I was the polar opposite of an eco warrior. It was a proud moment.

Would indeed be a very sad day if they close. Hopefully the economy will pick up again.

I reckon if Land Rover produced nothing but the Discovery-3 with the TDV8 engine (currently not a configuration they'll make) they would sell every single one of them, particularly in America.

They don't help themselves though.

I'd love a Discovery 3 - nice big HSE with all the trimmings. But at £45k it's not going to come out of petty cash.

So what has LR's 60th birthday special offer been? Walk into a dealer, pay 50-60% of the screen price now and then pay the balance in 2 years time.(or give it back)

Which idiot in their marketing team dreamt that one up? Just how many people can wander in and dump £25k on a salesman's desk? And, more to the point, who'd want to?

Do they really think that people want to stump up 24 months of payments (i.e. deprecation) right at the start of the deal?

T0ss3rs.

My father had up until he gave up farming a few years back owned Lnd rovers and he found they were incredibly unreliable, though incredibly tough which is why he kept buying them, tougher than what was about at the time.

Are we still with the attitude that if its British we should keep it going regardless of how they are made/quality!!! Its not really how business should be kept going, its more how a Nationalised company is run buy a govt. Just look how much of a pile of Crap the freedlander (first edit.) was. absaloute crap engine, very very unreliable.

My mate has a 53 plate R/R Vogue he is sick to the back teeth of the unreliabilty issues such as the prop shaft(or parts around it) needing to be replaced twice in 2 years(at great expense).

Its companies like Toyota who put Land rover to shame in terms of reliability and quality.

Yes it is a shame if they ever did go under, they are a British iconic company, but people talk with their walllets and if they are not buying them, and going ofr something different, then surely there are problems that need addressing. Alot of farmers around where I live seem go for 4x4's like Dihatsu Fortraks,

Surely tough and reliable are akin?

Got to hand it to those little fourtraks though, they can handle themselves off road for very cheap money.

I mean tough as in they can take a bit of a beating, reliability meaning crap engines...

Tell him to contact his dealer. There's a free of charge re-working of the front prop/diff that fixes the coupling problem.

He got charged an arm and a leg by his dealer, he broke down on a roundabout in cardiff (obviously unable to move) and they also rapped him on the recovery for it as well!!!
