How about bringing these back instead of the strange measures they are proposing?

Surely this would put more money in people's pockets, promote people holding on to their houses and staying married.

Oh, of course, they would help the respectable middle-classes who don't vote Labia...

Someone I know who is more than comfortably well-off is renting a room in his house to his girlfriend who is 'self-employed and out of work' (never worked a day in her life!) and getting the council to pay her rent for her which they both pocket to the order of over £600/month!!! He suggested that I divorce my wife but we stay together in the same house as it is more financially sound!!!

thoughts?

Why would Brown do that?? These things are hardly going to be popular with Browns payroll voters...

I'd suggest your friend step back and reassess his focus.

Which is benefit fraud which is (one) reason why the rest of us who are honest (including you presumably) pay so much tax.

Married MAN'S Alowance was abolished twenty years ago. It did survive in a revised form as The Married Personal Allowance up until the early year's of this government. Ironically, it still does exist for those over the age of 65.

I am not convinced that having a tax relief purely for being married is that worthwhile - specially as it never amounted to a lot anyway.

Mortgage interest relief is definitely worthwhile - and it still exists for those who borrow to buy a rental property. Why not have it for your main residence as well?

Nice to know our tax is going to such a wonderful cause. Fecking scum like them are bleeding this country white.

I know of many couples doing this, where the male buys a property and rents back to girlfriend, who in turn gets her rent (his mortgage) paid by the Council's Housing Department.
