Well, they're outsourcing us. To Computacentre?

Should I be worried?

Nah.

You should be terrified.

(And it's ComputaCenter - note odious American spelling and interstitial capital letter)

The entire desktops service of which I am a member is being outsourced from Nationwide to Computacenter.

Twat it, I wanted to cruise to retirement at Nationwide, I've done my time as a consultant going here and there and I don't want to work in milton bloody keynes either.

I work for Computacenter & they have just made me redundant.

Not in desktop support though - I work in the cabling division.

It all sucks hugely and what was really annoying was the management banging on about how important the staff were and how they'd been top priority. Oh just be honest for once you s, BUSINESS was the top priority, saving money, having someone else to blame if it fks up - these were the priorities.

Oh aye, and apparantly there will of course be a small group of employees retained, who will not transfer over. To maintain "continuity". Whatever that is. I wonder who that's going to be, the same management that's busily outsourcing us perhaps?

We knew this was going to happen though as soon as one particular bloke was put in as divisional director. He's very good at er, streamlining the business...

outsourcing is the bain of my existence.... hate it when my company did it to streamline stuff... now everything takes twice as long, is often wrong and they need babysitting throught the simplest instructions.

The team and partically everyone i know has no faith and hates the outsourcing team with all the polotics it creates...

this should help ....

Without knowing the deal involved the usual thing (as i am sure you are aware) will be something like a 6 month "transition" with the option to be absorbed by CS (at a $$ loss) or to take redundancy.

If you get rolled up in CS you will most likely be moved to another account where they have a bunch of monkeys on peanuts and need a ringleader to whip them into shape.

I hate the whole outsourcing model, it never provides a true quality of service and fit for purpose product to the end client, just a bottom line bottom dollar service that is held together with string and selotape.

Good luck!

Sorry to say it but yes, be worried. They're a bag of doo doo and the IT department will slowly, then quickly go down hill. People from IT will be leaving left right and centre so I suggest you start looking for another job and quick!

Funny you should say that is happening, because that is who used to supply Railtrack/NetworkRail with their IT support, before it was moved to Unisys and then brought in house to then to be outsourced again. If you stay there, i'm sure that it will come back to Nationwide after a few years. They will be looking to cut costs and so will bring it all back in house.

yes I've always found this a bizzare concept in a way because you'd have to ask why another business outside would be better able to provide a service at a lower cost, how badly managed must those departments be if that's really true eek?!! Maybe they should be looking at outsourcing the businesses management wink.

Exactly, the company where I use to work outsourced a large chunk of IT services and this is exactly what happened. It all had to be insourced again after many years.

It tends to lead to a poor service and the service provider blames the poor service on the cost pressures they are under by the company that outsourced the services. Well guess what, that means they could't provide the same service for less in the first place.

yes I'm not saying outsourcing is always a bad idea, sometimes other companies may have a real advantage but this type of faux "cost cutting" that some companies partake in should be analysed carefully.

Japanese companies, for all their faults, have often been able to opt away from outsourcing (tending towards making their own systems more efficient) as much of their businesses as competitors and I think in many cases the results of this are clear.

It tends to work best in smaller companies that can't afford to do the same service in house. So, for example, I outsource our HR because we don't have enough staff to make it worth employing someone, outsourcing it gives us a very good experienced bloke a few hours a week. Outsourcing whole departments of people rarely makes that much sense.

I used to work for ComputaCenter and I liked it. The only reason I left was because I got offered, (a lot), more money elsewhere. It was for a different sort of job so there was no contention, but I quite liked them.

My Brother works for Fujitsu Siemens. While he likes it, they perpetually seem to be in a state of flux.

JM2'sPW, but I've never got my head round the outsourcing model either!

We're talking 170 odd people.

They've already outsourced the Networks service to BT.

Months ago someone on here talked about Nationwide being outwardly "different" and caring yet quietly outsouring their core IT services. I guess they were right.

I hate outsourcing and I hate CC....

Never seen either work effectively and all of the projects I have seen, they always fall flat on their face - including outsourcing.

I simply do not see the need for outsourcing. Its just paper pushing and trying to pass the cost on to someone / something else. They talk about economies of scale, but if you IT systems and department are crap, outsourcing them isnt going to fix it. Investment is what is needed, and using outsourcing as an attempt to reduce your costs in IT is just plain stupidity.

Unfortunately, given the current economic climate, it will be used as an excuse to cut costs and staff. Shame, but then again in a few years the boom times will be back again. Cyclical market? You betcha.
