What did you manage to achieve that was important to you as a kid? Not in the context of adult aspirations but what you thought was cool at the time.

Maybe you made a really powerful catapult, or managed to overcome your shyness to ask the school beauty out.

We used to visit a local woods that backed onto a paddock with horses. As such, lots of barrels, gates and pallets were lying about the place which we used to build an awesome two-storey encampment with a hearth and slept in there on numerous nights... until we ripped it all down and built a different one the next month.

Olympic Trials at the age of 15, back of the net.

Other than that i remember building a plastic combustion engine at the age of 13ish i think. Which lit up when each cylinder fired!

Standing up to the two school bullies in Junior School (so therefore about 30 years ago). They had decided to go for me, but somehow (possibly due to some previously unknown in-built Ninja skills) I managed to kick one in the stomach and put him on his arse and clouted the other one on his nose, which made him quickly reconsider his options. They never bothered me again.

I am proud to say that that was the first and last time I've ever been involved in a fight.

skived school for 6 weeks straight pretending to be ill and another 2-3wks total thereafter for 'recurrences' and getting away with it! fessed up one christmas recently and the parents thought it pretty amusing.

first time landing the 'ski jump' on my bmx in the local woods was an achievement, seeing as i had amassed multiple injuries in all previous attempts.

receiving a kiss aged 8 from a girl who was being bullied. had to take a beating first though - chivalry yes, fighting skill; no!

longest wheely champ. too iirc

biggrin

On reflection of my own childhood, you wonder how it was that you would all fight to be the first to ride those hastitly constructed jumps* on your BMX.

  • For the un-initiated, this is BMX slang which generally is taken to mean either a.) one splintery plank, precariously balanced on a rickety stack of bricks, or b.) a pile of mud heaped into a super-sleeping policeman style lump, barely compacted an likely as not to simply grab your front wheel and heave you over the handlebars.

sent a bicycle design for a new BMX off to Raleigh in the post and received a big pack with pens, rulers, Raleigh Banana race cap for my troubles. A year later the shockingly similar Ultra Burner emerged which bore a striking resemblance to my felt tip pen scrawls. I have received no commission or to date.

Beat up one of the school bullies at aged 14.. and the guy was a 1/3 bigger than me (I'm not the 'heavy' type paperbag )

Guy nicked my pen, started gnawing on it in Music class, irked next thing i know I'm being pulled off of him by 3 guys after apparently going into a blind rage and leaping 2 tables, landing on him and proceeded to beat the living daylights out of him! All with the teacher looking on in shock with the rest of the class!

Surfice it to say, he never came near me again and i was the only one to get their name chanted by the ENTIRE year when we got our Record of Achievement presented to us in the main theatre spin
