"The Campaign Against Political Correctness has suggested changes for the game of British Bulldog:

- Name is far too patriotic and aggressive, change to International Poodles
- Safe 'home' areas called on each side to be renamed. Home is not always safe for children
- No winners or losers - must be non-competitive
- Children to wear full protective body gear, including knee pads, helmet and gum shields
- Catching friends is too violent - instead players to shout "poodle" when they get within one foot (or the metric equivalent)"

I think the BBC have been succesfully trolled!

I used to love this game. But to be fair it was in the days before neck breakers and WWF!

Is that sort of like Danish Longball?

.. Mind, we used to play Bulldog on concrete, I guess kids don't really think of the consequences.

When we played it you had to either lift the person off the ground, or grapple them down TO the ground! Kids these days are wimps!

yes

Bulldog on a concrete playground was loads of fun.

Danish longball was a vicious sport that bloody hurt.

Yup, always easier to just rugby tackle someone down from a (small) distance. Less chance of getting punched that way!

We were all banned from playing British Bulldog at my school in the 80s when a friend was tackled, fell on a bag, and ended up with a Thundercat stuck in his head.

This game was banned at our Jr school too in the 70's, so the name was changed (no idea who made up the new name) to cat-spring.I'm not sure how simply changing the name allowed us to continue playing, but it worked.I was regularly one of the last remaining to be caught and even made it through a field of around 25 people once - those whizz kid trainers ruled! I then got tackled and smacked my head into one of the concrete fence posts at the side of the playground and almost cut off the bottom of my ear and that was when they banned cat-spring biggrin

Gravity Dog cool

Played at the Warina on roller skates, Bladers versus the world, ahh, happy neck back and shoulder destroying memories.

Also don't forget "Tiggy on the lines" as if someone was in your way, you simply went straight on through.

Not like that, its just bulldog, but you have a tennis ball to get people out.

We used to play on a concrete netball/basket ball layout. The end half circles were safe...

...banned mid 60s at my school after someone broke his arm.

Anyone have it banned earlier than that!

My eldest who is 9 still plays it at school. Thankfully there are still schools who still allow it.

It was great fun. Dislocated my hip once. Was still laughing on the way to hospital, though that might have been due to the gas.

We used to play it until someone was "seriously" hurt, i.e. couldn't go on, and then we'd stop. Was banned on a regular basis at school, but then the teachers would forget and we'd be off again.

OK, whose playground had bits of fine gravel on it?

Made it all the more painful when hitting the ground, as any resulting cuts got filled with tiny stones.

Great fun though!

There's a lovely unintentional cock in the BBC's hopscotch picture too.
