After this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7596225.stm

What a powerful speech Palin gave, all 40 minutes of it rather than 10. Hopefully available on the web soon.

Already we got the wet left boo-hooing into their tax and spend plans over plain truths like:
"Taxes are high but Obama wants them higher"
"Government is big but Obama wants it bigger"
"He wants more of your money and will still tell you what to do with it"
"Obama is worried about the yuman royts of terrorists"

That last two are a paraphrased but close enough to be in quotes.
She came out fighting and as VP nominee was right to do a bulldog job on Obama (and the Democrat team) depicting BO as full of hot air and short on leadership in tough times. And so to that Hockey Moms thing hehe

I'm not a big fan of the new breed of pinko-green lefty, and given the Washington in-crowd's attitude to Palin and her family's troubled ordinariness it was a pleasure to hear such a convincing fightback.

SP is definitely not a pitbull with lippy...MILF with oracy to go.

Now awaiting the BBC's fear and hatred response.

What a refreshing change from Hilary Rodham Clinton and all her establishment political correctness.
Wouldn't it be nice if her and John got in?

yes

The rabid left have tried to make political capital out of her family but that's backfired.

I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer my politicians to have lived a little - taken drugs at uni, had an affair, have kids etc. At least then you know that they may be able to understand the real world a little.

It's the 2.4 kids, gleaming white teeth politicians that are usually the ones with something worth hiding...

For the sake of the world, I hope that the US is able to vote on who has the best policies, not who is blackest, most womanly etc. For Obama's colour, or Clinton/Palin's sex to even be an issue to the land of the self styled defender of the free world and democracy is quite ridiculous IMHO.

True, gender and ethnicity are irrelevant - but being a Democrat is just not acceptable wink

Not had chance to look into it all in a bit more detail yet, or read her speech, but one thing that strikes me reading the BBC news article is that she appears to be very 'representative' of American familys;
- She has a son in the US army, going to Iraq
- She has a disabled sun
- She has a pregnant teenage daughter
- Her husband was caught drink driving
Plus another daughter i believe?

Could this be a very clever move by the Republicans to choose a VP who will be seen to be in a very strong position to empathise with many US families?

Not looked into her credentials as Governor etc yet.

A bit rich given that she's a religious, anti-abortion, anti-whatever campaigner who wants her personal life choices imposed on others by law.

Of all the forms authoritarianism comes in, those you can buy off through taxes are actually the least annoying. wink

sorry for the edit, it's still early redface

"I'm not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I've learned quickly, these past few days, that if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.

"But here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion; I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

Ouch! Imagine a UK politican saying that about Westminister?

There's something of the "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" about her and the media reaction is almost the same. Good for her, she came across in the clips I've seen as a formidable opponent. The Democrats are absolutely vociferous in their attacks on her because, as it seems to me, her family have made some mistakes and compared to some, not exactly massive scandals; that's the true colours of the 'inclusive' and 'caring' liberal Democrats.

Kind of ironic that she is anti sex aducation and pro abstention.

Doesn't seem to have worked for her family why would she think it would work for the country ?

How ultra-right wing is she really, I wonder? These days a Republican candidate has to be seen to pander to the religious fundamentalists who now form a massively influential force in Republican politics. She may be a "breath of fresh air" in some areas but her religious views are certainly over there with the fundamentalists.

Also, there is an enquiry running into her conduct in Alaskan politcs (which is probably very parochial in nature given the small population of the state).

It is patently surprising that a pre-written, refined speech given by a politician with about as much depth as a shrew's chuff can win so many ready and waiting rightwingers.

How quickly a pair of tits (and for some, fear of the unknown but head-bangingly more accomplished black man) make them change their tune from their standard fodder of moralising at the lefties for their or their children's amoral behaviour. Oh, how refreshing, they cry! Refreshing? To have a pregnant daughter in your own back yard? Previously this type of candidate would have had them reaching for the shotguns under their Bibles.

Now, all of a sudden, it's OK to be a figurehead and frankly laughable (could you imagine her taking a call from Putin at 3am?) vice president as, primarily, risk tactic for winning the mood in a campaign for a McCain: a blistered, leathery reincarnation of Bush.

Sitting ducks.

It's worrying to think that this may end up as a battle of the Christian Fundamentalist Mentalists versus the other type of Fundamentalist Mentalists.

I notice that her line centres on the fact that she isn't an "ordinary" politician - that she isn't part of the normal political elite - that she understands the "common man and woman" and their needs.

It is interesting that a certain A Hitler pitched many of his speeches along those lines as well.

I'm not saying she's another Hitler but just that the basic sentiments she expounds can sound very reassuring to the electorate when their opinion of "normal" politics might be at a low level.
