Was chatting to 'er indoors this morning........

I said wasn't it amazing how people seem to continually come up with new stuff that is groundbreaking or sounds totally different.

(Status Quo excluded)

Will there come a time when the possible varieties have been exhausted?

We already have covers of covers, but is that down to laziness?

Or is music like snowflakes? Every one is totally different in some way.

Your thoughts?

We might have a revisit to the days of ELO then smile Maybe they'll come up with new instruments. Also although the variations might not be infinite we'll forget some older songs and they'll be reinvented with a new beat or something so although the tune is the same we don't remember it anyway and the new beat disguises it.

Complete brain fart there guys hope that made some kind of sense

There might be an almost infinite number of ways you can put notes together only a far smaller amount actually sound good together. Unless you like this I guess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_music

There are too many sounds in this world coupled with many different instruments and so many combinations available that there will always be fresh stuff available to write.

It would take so long to exhaust every possible song list that by the time every song had ever been made, the first 750,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 songs will have been forgotten anyway and it would be fresh music.

with electronic music people seem to come up with a new trendy genre every week, its very similar to the genre its derived from but they want to be part of a new niche and be "different". Go away you smelly clip-on dreadlock ponce!rolleyes

It also depends on what you class as music.

I consider some engine noises to be musical. Take any v12 Ferrari for instance. I don't really like Ferraris but the noise of one at full tilt definitely stirs something in me!!

So if you consider that anything could potentially be music then I reckon the variations could be infinite or at least bigger than we could ever quantify.

okay, i'll make it a bit simpler.

I class music as something made with a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.

i mean, you sound like you'd class stamping on a cream bun as music.

Well without trying to be overly obtuse, what exactly do you consider to be a musical instrument? Remember they played 'God save the Queen' on an F1 engine recently!!

Remember the old adage, "Music to my ears"? I think it's appropriate here.

Anyway, if you're talking about the number of variations in existing musical notes then my answer is that as the number of notes is finite then the number of variations is also finite. Maybe more than I'd care count but finite nonetheless.

I'll just go and try to be philosophical elsewhere.

okay, I'm trying to be 'mainstream'. I take your point but for the sake of the argument I'm including traditional musical instruments.

I'll allow maraccas if that keeps you happy smile

The number of notes is only finite in terms of the range human ears can detect (assuming you need to hear the note for it to be "counted") but what is inifite is the rhythm and articulation of these notes.
