Best way to propose marriage?
Discussion
A friend of mine is planning to pop the question to his girlfriend and has asked for some advice on the best way to do it. He wants the 'grand gesture' and, as fortune would have it, is a very wealthy individual so can probably pull it off.
So, assuming money was no object (within reason - no buying spaceships and proposing on the Moon!) how would you pop the question in a truly memorable way?

If money is no object, I was planning on doing it with a champaign balloon ride across the desert in Dubai either at sunset or sunrise. Unfortunately at about £1000, I'd blown most of my budget on the ring.... Just look in these Hello or O.K. magazines they're full of these classy 'grand gestures' for engagement ideas. They even have wedding photos too. Is he actually asking you for ideas or are you helping him off your own back? I expect she wants some romance element to the proposal and getting the idea from 20,000 hairy bored car enthusiasts doesn't seem a good start.

When I proposed she (my now wife) thought I was dumping her, and burst into tears.
I'd best keep out of this convo then
Sorry, you'll have to explain that one again? How did she mistake a proposal for a dumping?I'd best keep out of this convo then

And weren't you even a bit tempted to take the opportunity to get rid of and run with it?
