Christ alive, will it ever end?! Surely heads will have to roll as a result of this. I wouldn't be too happy at the moment if I was a prison officer!

If I were a prison employee I would be more than a little pissed off

k does any of this information ever need to be saved to a portable device?Allowing portable devises into or near any such secure information represents a mojor securiy risk and should be banned.
All PCs in such establishments should not have the ability to export any files.
Disable the USB ports and CD writers or replace PCs with dumb terminals.
They didn't even realise they'd lost it for a year... Good grief.

You know GCHQ really got their knickers in a twist when computers evolved from boffin-only backroom devices into one-on-every-desk office equipment

I wonder if this has always been a common occurance, it's just that since the media picked up on it with that rather major occurance a year or so ago, they've reported every one since. Maybe I'm wrong and the government have only recently gotten good at loosing things, I don't know...
It IS bizarre. Here at Nationwide, as a finincial institution we need data to be secured and we've had a scare recently and been censured by the FSA for it. So we've encrypted all our laptops, noone can write a CD from any machine except a very small number of fixed devices for that purpose. USB keys have also to be encrypted before they can be used to either read or write.
It's not rocket science and it's not expensive.

Ah, but you are not a Govt contractor, you work in the real world.
In the land of Govt contractors, you f**k it up right royally, and you are punished by being given another contract to supply even more goods/services, which, in the event of extreme delays/cost increases/data loss you are punished by being forced to undertake another project for the self serving scum.
To put it another way, in your job if you lost loads of data you'd be sacked. In Govt/Govt Contractor land, you are rewarded with a huge payoff.

Oh come on you lot! PFIs are a win win win!
Why get the government to do something, when they can pay a profit making company to do it for more money? And if there's a f&ck up (and there will be), it's the private company's fault! But nobody gets held to account.
If you're a recently jailed ex-Prison officer who's claimed benefits you've had your details lost 3 times now.

I supposedly had to pay the Govt a fee and jump hoops and make declarations re the data protection act.
The govt will get millions from people every year from people just like me who have to claim to protect data in a way the govt themselves are wholly incapable and the rub is I am threatened with huge fines if I breach that act.
I have stopped paying into that stealth tax now.
The data protection act is a crock of s
t.
I was filling in my fathers self assesment last week as he has had a stroke. I have power of attorney but still couldn't get simple things done like requesting copies of tax vouchers thanks to the data protection act. They demanded to speak to my father who cant even say his own name.
Data protection act needs to be binned along with the human rights act as the only people who suffer are the ones who are supposed to be protected.
