I regular look at Google Earth, and Google maps with satellite view.
Does any one know how recent or how old they can be (the views)

it still hasn't my crazy-paving driveway, or cars, so i guess they haven't updated the aerial maps for 2 years at least.

They can be 3 years old or more in some places.

I live in a field according to GE but I've lived here in my nice house for nearly five years now.

When looking at my house it would suggest the image being 3 years old maximum. A colleague at work however reckons the image of his house dates it much older than 3 years.

GE at least three years old and taken on a Saturday. Bin day in the street and judging by the cars in my old offcie car park.

I found a more recent map on an Estate Agents website. Dont remember which site, but my old 06 Astra sri is on the drive.

Looking at the house here, it would seem it's probably about AT LEAST 6 years?

I've just checked again....How come it shows the same field in daylight even though it's dark outside right now?

A quick look at my house shows it to be fairly up to date, no more than 1-2 years old.

oooh - mines been updated! No more than 2 years old, based on the extension I had built 3 years ago.

But my new place shows the factory that was here before, so that is very much more than 3 years old...

Guess it depends is the right answer smile

Just click around in the options - it will bring up great big green squares over each area showing the date they were taken.

The sats can either use night vision lenses or massive flash guns.
The latter can be mistaken for lightning.
Get somebody to go out and wave up at the sky and you'll see them.

It varies quite a lot. I would imagine in general, areas outside of big cities would be updated less frequently than somewhere like London. I'd guess anywhere from 1-5 years.

I tried to get a photo from Yahoo maps, I couldn't work out where I was or what I was looking at untill I noticed that the shot was so old my house hadn't even been built yet. 8 years old.

Went to see a customer the other day (a supermarket chain based in the North) and found that their new HQ offices were half / half on Google maps! In fact, you get half a car park and a bit of the building on one part of the map and then green fields on the other half. Looks really odd and a bit funny. This is just one of those funny photos that crops up on Google maps every so often.

The 'close up' shots are not satellite images, they are taken from an aircraft.

Seems to vary quite a bit from place to place. Had a look at where the 16 floor halls of residence are for my uni that were completed in September 2006, looks like the foundations have been laid and that's about it on google earth, so that must make it nearly 3 years old for the Ealing/Brentford area. www.multimap.com seems to be more recent because they have the images from Msn maps, which I beleive were taken much more recently.
