BBC Freeview Channels
Discussion
Over the weekend BBC1, 2 and News 24 were breaking up so bad that I had to watch analogue BBC. Today, after a digital channel upgrade, I've lost BBC1,2,3 and News 24.
Anyone else having these problems and do I now have to wait until the signals are back to full strength?
Oh..and WTF is going on?

Aha!
DVB isn't broadcast at nearly the same levels as Analogue was/is.
Personally I'm hoping that they turn the power up when analogue is finally gone, but I doubt it!
As an example Analogue is transmitted from our transmitter at 100kW whereas the BBC digital multiplex is 1.6kW. ITV and the others are only 1kW, and you really notice it. I virtually always have problems with ITV, and BBC usually is fine.

My Huamx allows me to chck the signal strength which is useful as I get signal from the local "alternate" transmitter. It could be that there was some engineering work going on and the BBC is your weakest signal. Mine tends to be the ITV channels. (Leeds).
I can do the same... every channel bar BBC is crap! Weird thing was yesterday BBC3 and 4 were perfect!!!My knowledge of these things is pitiful. However, my understanding is,
When "Freeview" was first launched commercially as "OnDigital" they tried to cram a lot of channels into the available space in order to compete with Sky. It collapsed because there still weren't enough channels and reception was difficult.
When the current "Freeview" was launched they allocated more space for each channel in order to give people a better chance of decent reception. It worked.
Now that Freeview is up and running they're back to their old tricks trying to cram more and more channels (and HD) into the available space. As a result reception is deteriorating again. No surprise.
PS As with Sky, is any human being really stupid enough to need to watch the shopping channels and phone quiz channels? I'd much prefer to see that space used to improve some channels we want to see.

When everyone trumpeted digital as being 'better quality' than analogue (so they can free up the electromagnetic spectrum for road pricing and other spying activities) they forgot to mention that the very short wavelengths are absorbed by moisture in the air...
An example of something that was perfectly good being replaced by something that costs more and doesn't work so well, but so surrounded by hype that nobody notices. Same goes for DAB.

Well sort of....... It's QAM16 and QAM64 and the use of QAM64 allows more channels at the expense of quality. Also the digital signal is transmitted at a lower level so as not to interfere with analogue. It will be ramped up to analogue levels as analogue is switched off. Hence the quality will again improve. When "Freeview" was first launched commercially as "OnDigital" they tried to cram a lot of channels into the available space in order to compete with Sky. The Use of QAM64 with MPEG-4 transmision will allow an increase in the number of channels along with HDTV services. This will mean you need to buy another Digital box though.
