I've been thinking of buying a domain name in...errr....my name.

There is absolutely no benefit to having one other than I fancy one!

So is it cool or is it naff?

I will now sit back and watch as you all rip the piss in the finest of PH traditions!biggrin

If you can get the .com version of your name then I would go for it. .anythingelse - I wouldn't bother.

my daughter had her name registered as a .com before her birth was registered paperbag

Edit: D'oh, too slow.

I've had a personal .com domain for over ten years. It's very useful when changing ISPs which I've done four times in that period.

How would one go about purchasing such a domain name?

I bought my name and have my blog on it. I don't think it gets many views but it's a great way of sharing photos with friends. If they have FBook and stuff blocked at work, they never have my website blocked.

No reason to use anyone other than www.register1.net for domain names.

other than price...

if you fancy it then who cares what anyone else thinks...???

thats what i think anyway.

if you buy a domain, you will need a little bit of webhosting to actually catch the email etc (appologies if you knew this already!!) - anyway, this is one of the things I offer. (cheaper than almost all, including ALL the ones mentioned above)

Cheers

I've had my own domain name (not my proper name mind) for about 4 years, it cost me £12 to buy, £12 to re-register 2 years later and this year 123-reg have quoted me £105 to register for another 2 years.. And it's only a .co.uk name....

I have a domain for my company (company-name.co.uk), and own a couple of other ones I bought for fun.

Always *.co.uk tho'. Keep it patriotic.

My name is available but being held by one of those rip-off domain holding companies.

Wouldn't mind it for a portfolio site being a web bloke n all.

That doesn't sound right. Are you sure the name hasn't lapsed and the £105 is a charge from Nominet. I'm pretty certain that 123-reg wouldn't charge that and if they do you can move it to another provider for free.
