Does anyone know of a legible product that will resist the vaguaries of our weather, suffer the odd stone being chucked at it, be resistant to fade, UV, frost and beasties, can be attached to something with a ty wrap and not be larger than 1"x 5"?

Dunno if it'll be any use to you but I've used a company called Briben Products in Bishops Stortford for all weird & wonderful labels. They always managed to find exactly what we needed.

That was for fairly large quantities though.

Try painting it in red wine on a beige carpet. That'll never come out.

Piroto Labelling (01604 646600) could probably assist, as they produce all sorts of labels/tags for various applications.

They are based in Northampton.

We use metal lables on our digger buckets, which survive some pretty severe treatment - obviously outdoors all year round - and remain legible. There's no reason that, cost permitting, these couldn't have a hole drilled/punched into them and do the job for years.

We get them from a firm called MTM in Chesterfield.

Otherwise, I gues you could use those flexi plastic tags, a bit like they use on the ears of livestock. Don't keep cows 'n' sheep, so I can't be more specific there.

I should have added that these need to be made to order on our premises using a process/kit/machine

If you look at this: DIGBITS Bucket Lable

The serial numbers are done at the lable firm, but the other data, Machine, Attachment type, Date are added by us in our works. You can do this a number of ways, the 'cheap' simple (but still effective) way is to scratch or etch by hand, slightly better is to use a small hand-held drill (like a Dremmel or something), but ultimately I know the manufacturer can supply machines to automate the process.

What we currently use is a black plastic track in which we insert plastic numbers and letters (black on a yellow background) to build a unique identity for an item.

It's very time consuming and I was hoping to find something like a big and rugged dynotape machine
