3am phone calls
Discussion
You can tell by the hour of this post (4am) that I have realised there are two 4 o'clocks in the day, as the result ofa s eries of anonu=ymous phone cals strating at 3am. This has been happening about evry 2 or 3 weeks for several month. I think it is some sort of auto dialler data transfer device but it is driving me mad.
It is a series of fairly high pitched 1 second beeps with half second gaps.
Anybody any idea what it is and what I can do about it?
My OH has elderly parents so 3am phone calls always send us into a bit of a blind panic. Sods law also that I had to be up at 4.30am this morning to go to London and when I get back have to drive to Northampton so today could be a long day.
We had these once, i seem to recall we got onto BT and told them to register all received calls, we noted down the times and then told them to bar those numbers that were beeping at us and i think we actually lodged a complaint with BT as well. Low and behold they stopped and we never got anymore.

Is it not a fax machine trying to fax something (stupidy) to your phone line.?
Sounds like it to me. We used to have issues with non stop calls going on throughout the day and eventually figured out it was a fax. Our solution was to hook up a laptop and when it started going off you could tell it to receive a fax and so figure out who it is from. We were being sent confidential information about child protection cases but no thanks was forthcoming for informing the agency that they had the wrong number, infact I believe the police were mentioned at one point. Like it's our fault they had their number wrong - it took them a further year to stop despite phone calls...We had something similar. It would also leave messages, had 13 in 1 morning.
The number was ex directory, so couldnt ask BT to block it. So they put a trace on my line, and when ever it called i was to dial 1477 to enable it.
Then call BT back and say i've just done a trace.
It didnt happen since i talked to BT, so never used it.

+1. Only give i.e. your parents/mrs the phone number and everything else can go to your mobile. Its total bliss now at mine no calls what so ever from the land line - though recently we have had an old biddy clearly transposing a Number and she shouts down the Phone "Hello Can I speak to Dora, is Dora there" "No sorry you have yet again dialled the wrong number".

It's an autodialling fax machine. If you plug a fax machine in and let it do its evil work you'll find out the culprit. It happened to me years ago but the TPS stopped it and with the faxes as evidence I helped the Information Commissioner close them down.
I have a Panasonic phone system that can be set to night mode - so it can't ring at night

Within a week never had a call again - and she kept asking when ever she was round has the line/number changed as its coming up as number not recognised. I just dialled it in front of her with my mobile nope working fine (she couldnt afford a mobile).
Job done.

Not neccessarily - it could be a modem call attempting to hook up to transfer data.Simpo Two said:

Isn't that a little dangerous, what if one of your relatives is rushed to hospital in the middle of the night and they are trying to contact you?

Somthing like that or a computer modem waiting for a response. I do this to all my annoying debtors who wont pay, set the computer to dial their home number every hour through the night. Doesnt make them pay but makes me feel better.Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
