Are we adding motorway driving to the test? Nah.

Night driving? Nah.

Adverse weather driving? Nah.

What we need, chaps, is to add a bit to the test about driving economically. Obviously, as a learner driver who's at the limit of their observation and manual dexterity, it'd be really helpful to tell them to change up through the gears earlier than usual, and other such handy safety hints.

>>>awaits cluster of messy accidents where newly qualified driver pulls out onto A-road in front of traffic doing 60 and proceeds to hit 4th gear at 20MPH<<<

They mention it in police driver training, they say "we will have to teach you about eco driving"... "Eco driving is about being in a higher gear.. There you go, we mentioned it".

Er, hasn't this been around for years? It was definitely on the test when I passed two and half years ago. There's a box for eco-safe driving on the Driving Test Report (with space for faults, serious and dangerous)

All you had to do was to move up to 4th gear when doing 30 and not revving the engine hard etc. Basically it was nothing you weren't already doing if you were up to test standard.

Ugh there wasn't when I did it 11 years ago, neither when I did the advanced about 5 years ago. In fact possibly the opposite, they encouraged me to get up to the speed limit as swiftly as possible and 'use as much of the road as you can (on B roads) safely to be able to see what's coming and after all "you paid for it"' smile

Great. Cue more retards dawdling down the motorway sliproads at 40mph and attempting to join the much-faster-flowing traffic at a pedestrian speed.

(By the way, this thread will be moved soon...)

Some cretin who commented on that article said:
Bringing in a minimum mpg for cars would be a good start. Some like 50mpg would be a good idea. (maby start at 40mpg) and push the limit up over time as technology permits.

Having 50mpg would encourage car makers to make vehicles more efficient and would encourgage them to invest in say hybrid vehicles to improve power vs mpg performance.
laugh . Wow.
