Another stupid and irrelevant question...

Missus and I were out at dinner the other night, and having neither of us worked in such an establishment before, we wondered, and have wondered this for a while, why when a waiter/waitress takes your drinks order, they then take away the wine glasses?
I though it is because they are just there to make the tables look nice and inviting, but gather dust and s
t all day?
Thanks in advance,

Depending on the establishment it is often because the drink you have ordered wouldn't be served in the type of glass that is set on the table.I though it is because they are just there to make the tables look nice and inviting, but gather dust and s

Did you order any wine?
Yes - a glass. But it has happened before when we have ordered a bottle, and water seems to come in tall glasses rather than wine glasses. It's bloody important guys!
They usually have white wine glasses on the table, so if you order a bottle of red they will swap them.
If you order by the glass, they pour them at the bar, not the table so take away the glasses.
Or do you look wierd and so they serve drink in plastic beakers and remove all potentially dangerous items from the table. Do they put corks on the end of your fork?

They remove glasses that are'nt going to be used as it gives you more space on the table.
In a half decent restaurant you'll have a glass for red, one for white and one for water, the water one usually gets left on the table as every table will usually have a bottle / jug of water on it.
If you order red they take the white & visa-versa.
It's like when you order soup as a starter they take away the starter knife & fork & visa versa.
Although in some hotels they have a starter, then a soup course & then a main.
