I have just tried to buy a new mobile phone and my credit check was rejected. There is no reason why this should be so, as neither I, nor my wife have ever defaulted on a payment.....

One possible reason is that the previous owners of our house (we have lived there 1yr now) have debts and credit card companies chasing them (we still get their post).

Does anyone know how I can find out the reason and resolve it, pronto?

Pay Experian - you can do it online. Very comprehensive.

I had this a couple of months back at C/Warehouse...called up my bank and they said they used a RANDOM credit check system and that I had an AAA credit rating. Went to the O2 shop as 02 use a more reliable credit check system and breezed through it no problem!

www.equifax.com
www.experian.com

both cheap to get your credit score, and shows ALL creits in your names an dagainst properties.
Theres always the chance you have been cloned, or someone taking something against your property so I would defo recommend you check your credit.

Might not relate to your financial activities at all- i had something turned down a while back, did an experian check, and found out that despite living at a previous address for 6 years, voting several times etc i did not appear on the electoral role at all, cock up by local authority- so there was an 8 year gap on that particular aspect- this was counting against me.
When i spoke to Experian, they told me that some other credit agencies ask that as the 1st question on the check, so i technically failed even before looking at the bank /credit history. Got it sorted really easily via Experian- worth the £15 it cost.

Hmm i've not had the credit check refused for a mobile contract before.
02 messed up and said my phone was insured when it wasnt so when i needed to claim they wouldnt release me a new one, i cancelled the direct debit through conflict of contract, i think im black listed for eternity with them now!

My credit check with Carphone Warehouse passed despite their checking the wrong address, where they also delivered the phone.
Luckily it was next door.

Thanks. I have registered with equifax and can see nothing but a sea of green blobs, so I still don't know what the problem is. The operator at Equifax said that it is not the previous owners actions, so I am now even more concerned.

Will call them back in the morning to discuss......

Check with Experian too as they often contain different information - for example when I used to have a Nationwide mortgage, it appeared on one check but not the other.

It shouldn't be previous owners unless they had the same or a similar name to you and have got you confused as the same person. If anyone else's details appear on your credit file, you can get them removed, even if you are related to them. Shortly after I moved out of my parents place, I did a credit check and got loads of stuff in my parents and brothers name appearing, which I asked them to remove.

Finally, in my experience, organisations almost always refuse point blank to discuss the reasons for rejection, which can be extremely frustrating, especially when there is no obvious cause. Are you on the electoral role, by the way, and have you recently moved address? Both of those can make a difference.

Good luck!

Do you always pay off your credit card bills in full without incurring any interest? If so, your rating will be worse as you don't generate much money for the card issuer.

yes

Had a similar issue many moons ago when trying to get a phone with no borrowing history, and also when I got my first expensive car the finance was rejected because I had only ever had a student credit card and student loans.

Had this problem before with the Alliance & Liecester. Tried to take out an ISA. Got knocked back. No reason just a letter to say to contact the credit agency.Eventually paid up £15 with "Checkmyfile" and the reason given is I have NO credit. Don't have a mortgage, no loans, credit card paid every month, no credit checks done on me in the last 2 years, so they reckon I am a bad risk.

And I was trying to give THEM money FFS. God help me if I ever need a loan or suchlike!!!!!

p.s. my missus doesn't work and she got one from them...no problem!!!

Credit checks are the most flaky and potentially unfair things.

A few years ago I had cause to check mine. My Mother was on it, my Brother was on it, the people I bought my previous house off were on it as were the people I sold it house to, (both of which defaulted on their mortgages!), and add to the fact that I lived in a block of flats in a less than solubrious area at the time all conspired against me!! And none of it was my fault!!

Have you applied for any other things recently? I have heard that if you make several applications for credit within the space of a few weeks if can cause problems with your credit scoring. I think it was a way of stopping people going out and getting loans from 10 different banks in a month or similar. Just an idea.

Same here, did a credit check after tussling with NTL over something, and I received copies of all the credit cards, amounts, mortgage etc of my parents as well as myself. Isn't that sort of thing illegal, divulging the private details of other people?

www.checkmyfile.com

Use them, and pay for all three credit check companies details on you. It's about 20 quid and it's well worth it and if you do it online it takes about 3 minutes to get all the information through.

If you got rejected from Carphone warehouse for an Orange contract you should pass at an Orange store.. They have a very bizarre Credit check... So many people leave there being rejected and are sent to our shop to find out why.. We credit check them and 9/10 times they pass... I imagine it will be similar to all networks...

There loss = our gain!
