Student House - Front Door Security?
Discussion
I've Googled this afternoon but can't find anything to help me.
We've recently moved into a student house which has a (fairly) old fashioned wooden front door with a singular "Yale" style door lock. I was under the impression that under the HMO regulations a more secure form of door locking was required (as well as the ability to open the door from the inside without a key) - though I'm not sure where I've read this.
Does anyone have any information on this area of rental - or somewhere where you can point me?
Cheers

My student properties, which fall under the HMO legislation, only have “Yale” style night latches on the front doors, although all have both fire and burglar alarms installed, the latter not falling under the HMO legislation. We've recently moved into a student house which has a (fairly) old fashioned wooden front door with a singular "Yale" style door lock. Landlords are placed in a difficult position with legislation, first they need in the event of a fire escape to be easy available to the occupants/tenants, and at the same time are expected to make it difficult for the burglar to gain entry to the property.
Whilst I would suggest if you have any concerns with security you raise those with the landlord, you might also help yourself by closing windows when vacating the property, draw curtains closed at night, with the light left on again when vacating the property. Lastly make sure that the value of your possessions are covered under your parents home contents insurance.

We've got locks on all the windows so these will remain locked much of the time (but in the "slightly ajar" position to aim to prevent damp). We've also put a timer switch lamp in the fronnt room downstairs

Excellent backdoor security is just as important. Particularly so if you're going to be inviting any PHers round.
There are a variety of bolts and locks on the backdoor, so there will hopefully be no unauthorised access via the garden.outlaw biker said:
Whats with all the student posts? Is it half term?
I have been here for quite a while, but you're right, I've been out of Uni since May, go back next week. The Ben said:
Fecking hell, when I was a student, (up to last june) I was always too pi55ed to worry about getting burgled...
not sure if anything was nicked, but it only took one car load to move my stuff out
If I'm honest, I'm more concerned about the car parked outside being damaged/nicked than the house being burgled!not sure if anything was nicked, but it only took one car load to move my stuff out

So you're saying that your back door is impervious to being smashed in?As for your car, well the obvious is not to leave any valuables on show, wing mirrors and aerial folded/pushed in.
