Calling all Vinyl nerds - Beogram help

Good morning all,

I have just been given a Beogram model 1202 turntable in good working order

Now, the only problem I will have is connecting it to my modern amp. I have a Sony amp which I use for my 5.1 surround sound, as well as running my CD player and mp3 player.

The turntable is low output so I will need a pre amp (Is this right?). What suggestions do you guys have? I think its a DIN socket input - how hard are these to connect up?

hi dan,

yep you do need a phono stage to boost the signal.

however i wouldn't touch that vivanco thing with a bargepole.

pro-ject do a good phono module. i have the original phono box on my modern amp. but the mk2 version is very well regarded and a much better way to spend your £50.

google pro-ject phono box and you should find them. also search for them on ebay, NAD do a good one that can usually be had at a bargain price.

the only important bits your specific turntable are the connectors, which can be found at a hifi retailers or you can make your own up from components.

also consider buying a second amp. i bought a mint stainless fascia'd yamaha for £30 that retailed at over £500 back in 1972! had been fully serviced, has a variable sensitivity phono stage and has bags more character than any reasonable priced modern amp.

yeah the cable is the important bit for his specific turntable, but vivanco = junk.

much better to buy a decent phono box and cable seperately. ebay will have the cables, else maplins can make some up for less than a tenner whilst some better ones are sourced.

Thanks for the replys guys. This really is new territory for me so any help is appreciated.

I'll have a look on the suggested website and see what new goodies i need to buy

In the future I want to have a dedicated hi quality amp with pre amp for the vinyl and then a general stereo for cd's, mp3's and surround sound.

Will this work with the turntable i mentioned in the first post? Obviously i'll need to buy a cable with a DIN female end and phono outputs as well but will this do the job of boosting the signal conneect to my modern Sony amp?

Not wishing to give bad news, but have you checked getting a stylus for it?
Pretty certain you can't get them and haven't been able to for a very long while.
(You can't change the cartridge or set tracking weight either).

Better of binning it and picking up a Dual / Project / Rega or similar off e-bay for a few ££ more.

What makes you say you can't change them? Also the weights on the back of the tone arm adjustable for tracking.

yes. there are fancier ones but the project is perfect for a budget/midrange set-up

Haven't looked at phono pre-amps for years. Ordinarily I would have said that the Pro-ject was overkill for something like the beogram, but can't imagine you'd get something reasonable for less.

B&O cartridge don't use the standard 1/2" mounting, although some used to be supplied with adaptors so they could be used on normal turntables.
With regard to tracking weights etc i stand corrected, certainly on some of the more recent ones this was fixed as was the weight of the cartridge.

I've been snooping around and it seems this was the dogs noodles back in the day with quite a few refinements on it.

Richer Sounds sell a very good, well regarded phono preamp, The Cambridge CA640P.

It works with both moving magnet (what you have I suspect) and moving coil cartridges.

Its not me thats paying - its the GF at xmas time

So come on guys - any experience of these products? Which is better? They have basically the same features...

Personal preference would be pro-ject as my older bro (cerbfan) used to have a pro-ject turntable and it sounded the nuts.

I recently picked up a Dual CS505-4 from freecycle ... chuffed to bits to have the vinyl available for fun again. I didn't bother trying to connect it up to the existing kit but got a Cambridge Audio A5 Amp with phono pre-stage (PM-01) from a local second hand shop (chav place that specialises in nicked mobiles and pawned car stereos) for £40 and a pair of Mission bookshelf speakers from Cash Convertors (wore dark shades and a wig in case seen entering) for £30.

I got the recored player from freecycle as well off some guy who had broken his amp. Unfortunatly i don't have the room for another stereo
