Went to Tesco this morning, whilst standing at the checkout I hear the checkout girl tell the couple in front of me that they should bring teir own bags in future as Tesco are goin to stop having carrier bags. As she starts with my shopping I ask for some bags which she does give me.
Now the rant. The bags are crumbling to pieces before I've even put anything in them. The cashier says she knows they are not very good. So after putting just a few bits in one which are now on show through the gaping holes in the side of the bag, I now have to double the bag up.
So to save the planet I have now used six bags instead of three, have a kitchen full of carrier bag flakes and instead of reusing the bags, they have gone straight in the bin.
As for their green policy, why the hell does a single storey building need lights end to end the whole length of the store on during the daytime? How about using roof lights and something called daylight.
For those who are about to say that I should have taken my own bags, I actually went out to get bus into London, instead of driving in, gone to buy a one day bus pass, to be told they dont do them any more and I need an Oyster card, why the feck is this? So the bus wont take a Ten pound note so thought sod it and ended up in local Tesco.

Excuse my ignorance but why don't shops over here just use paper bags - which can be recycled?

Glad it's not just me!

I was about to do my weekly shop in the (formerly good now cursed) CoOp Fiveways. It's only half a mile away. Then I remembered they don't do bags, so I drove 11 miles to Morrisons instead. Infinitely bigger, infinitely nicer, well worth the extra trip.

So CoOp's plan to save the planet rather backfired then hehe

I'm thinking of writing to Morrison's Head of Important Matters and congratulating them on retaining carrier bags, and not to make the same damn fool mistake as the CoOp. I thought I'd sent a copy to the Head of Stupid Decisions at the CoOp as well... commie gits.

You should ask for some decent bags, and if they don't give them to you, leave your shopping on the belt, and go somewhere else that will.

I have some of those hardy reusable bags (Mine are from a French supermarket, but they all do them here) which I reuse every week. Very sturdy (a year of weekly use and no discernible wear) and cost me 30p for three large ones.

Haven't all supermarkets been having free bags-for-life promotions in recent months? We've around ten of them from three different supermarkets, haven't paid for any of them. It's not too taxing to take a couple when going shopping.

I have done this before in Woolies when you go to the check out and the price is different to the marked price and the numpty just stares at you.
As for today, its taken me weeks to get round to doing some shopping and I was hungry.biggrin

The CoOp one costs £1 and looks gay.

There was some note in Sainsburys saying they'll be hiding the free carrier bags some time in October.
What annoys me is they make it seem like a new idea to re-use your own bag!
Shirley, Granny used to take her basket to the shops & put everything in it.
O.K so the butcher/greengrocer/fishmonger might wrap their goods in yesterday's newspaper, but at least you could use it to light the fire.

Surely putting newspaper on the fire which has had fish wrapped in it would make your house smell like a brothel.hehe

The Co-Op was founded to promote the Labour Party political interest and it still does so, enough reason to completely avoid it. The Co-Op party being basically a fraction of Labour.

And even when it is dark, if they had the lights mounted on the surface of the ceiling like they always used to, instead of recessed in stupid recesses which shade out half the light, then they'd only need half as many lights...

No it's not. But it is utterly ludicrous to take a bag-for-life to the supermarket, and bring home a roll of plastic bin bags in it. I use the regular carrier bags as bin bags. They would essentially like me to buy purpose-made plastic bags instead of recycle others. The short-sightedness of it, and every other "green" scheme, is epic.

IIRC, supermarkets use lighting and colour schemes in a very clever way to essentially send you into a trance when you go into the shop. They can then wow you more easily using bright colours for BOGOF offers etc.

I've also heard that some supermarkets even have blink rate registers which monitor how often people are blinking at certain points around the store(the slower the better for them), and so how easily influnenced people can be.

I could have been spun a very large yarn by someone in the past though!

I could just be making this up though.

For anyone who thought these bags can't be that crap, here you go, and if you don't want to lose your shopping on the way home, triple or quadrouple them up.

Some do, but not very many. And it tends to be clothing retailers, not the supermarkets.

It would be the obvious answer, I think.

Oh top tip for you biggrin

I see you have Tesco mint biccys. Right well first off make one cup of tea, and take one biccy.

Next bite one corner off the biccy, and then the opposite corner at the opppsite end.

Then dip biccy in tea, and suck the exposed bitten bit, till tea reaches you mouth.

Now for the best bit....remove biccy quickly, and consume.....BLISS cloud9
