A bit of one of my teeth broke off the other day, it was slicing ribbons from my tongue so I got my Gerber tool out and filed it down. Now its nice and smooth. Odd feeling, filing something in my mouth.

Anyone else done surgery on themselves?

One of my (tooth) veneers popped off as I was on my way to work. A six day stint of having teeth like a burnt down fence did not thrill me so I bought some superglue and stuck it back on. Worked a treat.

Also used superglue for the usual wound sealing.

Tell us again, why didn't you just go to the dentist?

Mind you, I once gave myself a lobotomy, so I think own brand surgery is great.

Three 16 hour+ days and breaking the tooth on the first, is why.

Had a pea sized swelling underneath the skin, just under the jaw.

Should have gone to the doctor.

But instead, I decided to lance it. Sterilised a needle, and pushed it about a centimetre into the swelling. More out of fascination than medical expediency, wondering what colour the pus would be and what it would smell like.

I was hoping it wasn't a gland which would lose function after I stabbed it.

Pus was disappointing. Needle stuck in that far hurt more than I expected.

And it just got bigger, so I tried again.

Slightly better pus but more blood this time, and the thing went after a week or so.

So in conclusion, it was interesting but ultimately risky and stupid.

Thats good, and glad it is feeling better but there is usually a reason why a tooth breaks. Like underlying decay. That is mostly the reason why teeth break. Even thought you have sorted the the roughness you should go to the dentist and have it checked out, decay just keeps going and you could end up having a lot of pain if the decay goes deeper. Then you will end up with pain and an abcess and may even loose the tooth alltogether! So just to keep an old dental nurse / oral health educator happy please go to the dentist! X

Being a keen amateur surgeon and cook, I've always liked the idea of taking out a non-essential organ (tonsil, spleen, appendix) and cooking it up for tea.

Regrettably I lack the requisite confidence to execute this plan.

I also think the wife would object to me hanging said organ in the shed for a few days to "make it more gamey".

Good lateral thinking though.

Feck, you'd eat part of your own body?

Mingin.

Still with some fava beans & a nice Chianti...

The meat is ethically raised, from a known source. What's the problem?

I once used a pair of pliers to remove an unsightly wart on my thumb; there was rather a lot of blood!! I wouldn't do it again.

i have done this and all. Worst was removing a serious ingrown toenail in the bath and as my feet were awful after being stubbed so often i had to do it 3 times. Each time ended in it being infected and oozing puss for 2 months at a time.

I had two loose molars when I was younger which annoyed me to death. I was eating a chocolate eclaire one day (the toffee type) and the sweet pulled one of the teeth out by accident.

I decided to do the same on the other side.

Mine was boring.

done that before too, couldnt be bothered with the waiting around at hospital.

Snippy snip with a pair of nail scisccors and just tugged the thread out with a pair of tweezers.

This of course was for a nasty cut on my elbow, wouldnt advocate it following surgery.
