Was eating some Sainsbury's own brand Jaffa Cakes the other day, and they tasted like arse. Got me thinking what products are cheaper but better. Couldn't really think of any. Not just food related.

Think the old addage "you get what you pay for" is generally quite true. Or is it? Discuss.

In many cases no, it isn't. Bose, for example. Or Sony. Or Volkswagen wink

Am interested to know what the issues are with Bose, because two of my good friends swear by them...

How can I educate them?

The quality of the manufacturing, and consequently the sound quality belongs with equipment costing about 5 times less than what they charge. Those Acoustimass systems sound absolutely dire, and yet they still get away with charging the earth for them. Same with their clock radio, sorry, Wave Radio.

Cheap speaker cabinets with minimal internal bracing, cheap woods and materials, cheap paper-coned drivers, cheap crossover circuitry. It's just marketing bks, really. That's how they sell.

Their "PA" (pub music) equipment is adequate, but you can't really associate that with sound quality wink

We used bose speakers at several gigs recently and on each night they cause a fecking nightmare - just didn't pick up sound on certain leads (despite the leads working with other equipment), created terrible feedback - overly loud in areas around them but didn't allow the sound to travel very well.

Good old JBL any day.

Been very happy with Bose stuff.
The stereo in my dad's Audi is fantastic, the Lifestyle 28 surround system is very good and the soundock for my iPhone is ace! thumbup
Generally if I was bothered about buying something I would do a bit of research before buying. i.e. When I recently bought a D SLR I did some homework, but I didn't when I bought cheese wink

I've heard a couple of Bose car setups and am not convinced that there's much merit over my Pioneer DEH-P7000UB, JBL subwoofer (not just set up for maximum noise, either) and stock Honda speakers, either. biggrin

Of course they swear by them, they've spent thousands on a product that isn't actually tangibly better than something half the price.

My mate has a Bose surround, and it's been in for repairs twice in the last year, and isn't as nice sounding as my Kef / Yamaha / Samsung separate system that cost less than half.

Blended whiskies are better than single malts.
The whole idea of the blending is to cover the deficiencies of each malt and to make the most of their good points.
Single malts are far more one dimensional than blends and far more demanding of the drinker.
Bells 10 year old is a better drink than most malts.

Also with Jonnie Walker the Red, Black and Blue labels are not progressively better than each other. They are just different. I have all three of them open here now.

Macallan charge a fortune for their older malts. Glenfarclas is just up the road in Speyside and makes a very similar tipple sold at many ages at far more reasonable prices. I have a bottle of their 21 year old.

Restaurant food! Spend about £15-£20 on a dish in a good restaurant, and you'll get a good plate full of quality and tasty food. Spend double that in some super swanky high class place and you'll be lucky to have a thimble full of unrecognisable st that someone has seen fit to stack it in a pile, and drizzle some mess all over it and the ludicrously enormous plate.

Food:

Not food - overpriced muck that would lead to getting something to eat on the way home from the meal as you'd be hungry:
