As a result of my big toe getting stomped on just a little too often in the crowds at the V festival a few weeks back, the nail on my big toe is on the verge of falling off.

My toe went black under the nail, which now only appears to be attached to my foot by the skin around the edges of the toe. a yucky gooey substance appears to be leeking from underneath the nail.

So, should I let nature take its course or just grit my teath and rip the fker off?

At this stage you'd be wise to hack the whole toe off. Otherwise gangrene is inevitable.

This happened to me after skiing. Leave it alone, it'll be annoying for a bit but will then drop off (most likely in the bath...)

This happened to me when I was a kid. In the playground someone stood on my thumb. The nail started to go red, then black. When it was fully black I considered pulling it off, biting it or whatever. But my mum told me not to be so silly. After a fortnight the skin of my thumb had begun to go purple. A dark forboding purple. A week later and my whole thumb, down to the wrist had gone black. At this point my mum decided that it would be a good idea for me to go to the doctors after all. The doctor was shocked and referred me straight to the hospital. After 24hrs shock had set in and I was going into spasms. I was taken into surgery, and emerged several hours later to be informed that my thumb had had to be amputated. The surgeon said, and these were his exact words, "If only you'd pulled that fking nail off you nitwit!!!". I was mortified and my mum was in tears. My dreams of a professional career as a hitchhiker were well and truly shattered.

Don't let this happen to you!

The black will be a big blood bubble... Let the nail fall off of it's own accord, but constantly bathe your toe in warm salt water in the mean time or it could get badly infected, unless it already is, in which case sudden death is inevitable...

Patch it up with araldite, or smear some superglue in there. Might nip a bit hehe
