Just heard the JV show on Radio 2.
Joanna Lumley campaigning for the Gurkhas to be allowed residence in the UK.

Personally I think they should.

Of course, regardless of the original 'deal' they have served the country and more times than not appear to still have something to offer, unlike alot of others we appear to accept.

It shouldn't be viewed as immigration, more like a reward of distinguished service.

While I voted 'yes', part of me worries for them should they 1. Choose to move here then 2. Lose their spirit, and become infected with the British malaise.

The chaps taking the case are in a rather odd situation. They did serve in the UK's armed forces but NEVER served in the UK (most were based in Hong Kong until 1997).

I still voted yes - of course.

  • Nepalese soldiers who fight hard to get in to the British Army, fight for us, work damned hard and get: No pension, limited medical (well, none) and no residency...
  • Foreigners who come over here illegally for no good reason% get: Tons of benefits even though they've contributed nothing, dental, medical, etc and residency
  • Chavs and their families who sponge off the state get: Even more benefits for them and their 45 kids (having never had a jo)b and a free house
I know who I'd rather subsidise.

They deserve residency, how this can't be seen by the powers that be is beyond me.

% With the specific exclusion of those who are legitimate asylum seekers or can/have contributed

The Gukhas are one of the best and most loyal of any British Forces at any time. I had the honour to serve with them for a short time.
The way this despicable government is treating them is absolutely disgusting, not only are they not letting them in (but letting Taliban terrorists live here at our cost) but they are also reducing their hard-earned and microscopically small pensions. We should be removing politician's pensions to support our friends, the Gurkhas
These are people who have been solidly loyal to Britain and the Crown for centuries, there is more loyalty in one cell of a Gurkha than all damned socialist politicians put together!

SHAME SHAME SHAME on you politicians!!!

Of course they should be allowed. All other foreigners who serve in the British military for at least 4 years are allowed.

We let the Scum of the earth into this country and then support them yet we cannot allow these decent guys who have a long tradition of fighting for our country to say here.

All the time we treat those who are here and wish to distroy us to do so and stay.

If they decided to invade, I doubt we could stop them.

The government keeps bleating on about citizenship tests for immigrants.

I would suggest that centuries of staunch support as a group and an individual willingness to lay down one’s life for this country might be just the test we need.

Keep the Ghurkha’s; deport those who cannot measure up to their standards.

Not making any excuses for the current shower in power but they are just upholding laws that have been in place for decades. In fact, it was New Labour who granted Gurkhas the right to live here in the first place.

So, whilst I still think the current siuation is wrong, this government has actually moved a long way towards treating the Gurkhas better.

Voted yes, of course! Sometimes, I feel deeply ashamed to be British - Is it the left's policy to let in people who take and willingly spout hatred for their host country, but keep out people who would without hesitation give their lives for the UK? It is an utter traversty.

Yes. Now.

Pre 1997 (I think it is) - no, they can't.

I'm sitting here raging about the idiots that write into Radio 2.

Of course they should be left alone and allowed to stay here! They should also have the same rights as the rest of us. They have done more for this country than most and this should be recognised.
